The battle between Kepa Arrizabalaga and Andriy Lunin has been ongoing for a long time in the Spanish capital. With both players having proven their worth in Thibaut Courtois’ absence, the manager has been faced with an acute dilemma in recent weeks over his preference.

Kepa was the chosen one for the Spanish Super Cup semifinal earlier this week after much deliberation. The Spaniard made a stunning four saves from inside the box on the night, but his conceding three goals cast doubts over whether he would start in the final on Sunday.

Manager to retain faith

“In the first two goals he could not do anything and in the third he may have been bothered by Morata’s jump. We’ll see who the goalkeeper of the final is,” Carlo Ancelotti said to the media after Real Madrid’s semifinal win.

Needless to say, the manager’s words cast serious doubt over his confidence in Kepa and the Spaniard’s chances of starting in the final against Barcelona.

Now, according to a report from David Aguilera (h/t Madrid Xtra), the coaching staff maintain their confidence in Kepa. They will not allow one poor result to mask their high opinion of the player and undo his hard work.

The on-loan star will thus start against Barcelona in the final later this week and will have a golden chance to redeem himself.

The division of labour

As revealed earlier this week, Real Madrid coach Ancelotti has worked out a formula to divide minutes between his two in-form goalkeepers.

From here on, Andriy Lunin will be the team’s first-choice goalkeeper in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. Kepa, meanwhile, will focus on the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, as revealed in the latest update.

The aforementioned division, needless to say, is subject to form and fitness. Considering the rich vein of form both stars have shown this season, however, it is unlikely that either will drop their guard.

As Real Madrid get closer and closer to their final game of the season against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League, they are now sweating over the availability of one of their players.

It has already been confirmed that both David Alaba and Aurelien Tchouameni will miss the finals in London due to injuries.

Other than that, Carlo Ancelotti is likely to have the entirety of his squad available at his disposal, although there could be some concerns surrounding Andriy Lunin.

Lunin not in training for the third day in running

Indeed, Andriy Lunin has not participated in team training today, making it three days in a row heading into the Champions League final, reports Mundo Deportivo.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper is down with a fever that has kept him out of training for three days in a row now.

However, the report does add that despite not being in training for three days now, the Ukrainian international will fly to London and be on the squad list for the finals.

But with reports already suggesting that Thibaut Courtois will be starting in goal against Dortmund, Lunin’s continued absence from training only further strengthens the Belgian’s chances.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was absent from training on Tuesday due to personal reasons, is back working with the rest of the squad today. The Spaniard will have no involvement in Saturday’s final though.

Carlo Ancelotti is likely to go with the exact same starting lineup that he named for the Merengues’ final La Liga match against Real Betis.
