Speaking in an interview with DelSol 99.5 FM, former Barcelona striker and club legend Luis Suarez has sensationally claimed that Real Madrid wanted to sign him in the summer of 2014.

Suarez, at the time, was still at Liverpool and had established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in the Premier League.

A number of top clubs were vying for the Uruguayan striker’s signing at the time, and the current Inter Miami star has revealed that Real Madrid were also among his suitors in 2014.

Suarez went on to claim that Los Blancos were planning on offloading Karim Benzema to Arsenal at the time and were pushing to sign him as a replacement.

“Before the 2014 World Cup, Real Madrid wanted me as they wanted to sell Benzema to Arsenal. Barcelona at the time was interested and Luis Enrique was pressing,” stated Suarez.

However, things did not go down that way after he was handed a lengthy ban of four months for biting Giorgio Chiellini in the World Cup during Uruguay’s game against Italy. But Barça kept on pushing even after the incident and that is how he ended up at Camp Nou.

“The bite case happened and Barcelona continued to want to sign me despite the punishment. I will always be grateful for that,” the Uruguayan legend added.

Suarez went on to achieve greatness at Barcelona, winning a host of titles and trophies. At the same time, Benzema thrived at Real Madrid, etching himself in the club’s history, and establishing himself as a legend, before leaving last summer.

In the end, everything seemingly worked out for everyone involved.

Real Madrid will sign off on their successful La Liga campaign today with a fixture against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The game, being seen as a final preparation for the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, sees manager Carlo Ancelotti field his strongest possible lineup.

All eyes will obviously be on the retiring Toni Kroos, who bids goodbye to the Bernabeu in what will be his final home game as a Real Madrid player.

The German international starts in the centre of the park alongside Federico Valverde, while Eduardo Camavinga slots in as the No. 6.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid captain, Nacho Fernandez, also starts in what could be his last game at the Bernabeu as well.

Nacho pairs up with Antonio Rudiger in defence, flanked by the full-back pairing of Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy. Thibaut Courtois starts in goal ahead of Andriy Lunin and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Up front, Vinicius Jr. starts in attack, partnering up with Rodrygo Goes. Top scorer Jude Bellingham occupies the attacking midfield role for Real Madrid.
