Barcelona veteran rejected Real Madrid ‘in two hours’ earlier in his career – report

Seven years ago, Real Madrid began exploring the option of acquiring a centre-forward. During the winter transfer window, they decided to approach Robert Lewandowski, but the Poland forward rejected the approach within two hours reports Catalunya Radio (h/t SPORT).

Rhe current Barcelona frontman might not have ended up in Catalonia if he had accepted Real Madrid’s offer. At that time, his relationship with Bayern Munich was at the top and he did not want to leave the team midway through the season.

What’s the story?

Lewandowski’s journey took a dramatic turn in the summer of 2022 when he decided to don the famed colours of Barcelona, bidding farewell to an illustrious eight-season tenure with Bayern Munich.

Yet, his story nearly unfolded differently, as Real Madrid sought to lure him away during his stint in Bavaria before he moved to Catalonia.

Florentino Perez, Real Madrid president, decided to choose Predrag Mijatovic as a mediator in the pursuit of Lewandowski. Negotiations followed, even culminating in a lucrative offer for the striker’s signature.

Why did Lewandowski reject Real Madrid?

With a sense of urgency conveyed through a telephone call from his agent, Lewandowski had a decision to make. However, in a surprising turn of events, the striker took merely two hours to deliver a resolute “no.”

The motivation behind Lewandowski’s rejection came from his detailed nature on the field. Signing with Real Madrid mid-season would have resulted in a rushed decision, potentially compromising not only his performance but also Bayern Munich’s season.

Furthermore, the abrupt transition would have hindered his ability to maintain his training regimen, as he considered it crucial to have a high-performance gym at home.

Such a setup, he believed, could not be readily arranged, jeopardizing his adaptation at the Santiago Bernabeu by several months.

Real Madrid will sign off on their successful La Liga campaign today with a fixture against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The game, being seen as a final preparation for the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, sees manager Carlo Ancelotti field his strongest possible lineup.

All eyes will obviously be on the retiring Toni Kroos, who bids goodbye to the Bernabeu in what will be his final home game as a Real Madrid player.

The German international starts in the centre of the park alongside Federico Valverde, while Eduardo Camavinga slots in as the No. 6.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid captain, Nacho Fernandez, also starts in what could be his last game at the Bernabeu as well.

Nacho pairs up with Antonio Rudiger in defence, flanked by the full-back pairing of Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy. Thibaut Courtois starts in goal ahead of Andriy Lunin and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Up front, Vinicius Jr. starts in attack, partnering up with Rodrygo Goes. Top scorer Jude Bellingham occupies the attacking midfield role for Real Madrid.
