Confirmed: Real Madrid send letter to UEFA calling for disciplinary proceedings against Barcelona in Negreira Case
Real Madrid have taken a significant step in the ongoing Negreira Case by officially informing UEFA of what the club describes as new evidence related to the long-running investigation involving Barcelona and former refereeing official Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.
The Spanish giants released an official statement confirming that they have sent a formal letter to UEFA, urging European football’s governing body to revisit the matter and resume disciplinary proceedings.
The move represents the latest development in one of the most controversial cases in Spanish football and signals Real Madrid and Florentino Perez’s determination to push for further action at a European level.
New evidence strengthens existing concerns
In their official communication, Real Madrid stated that the information provided to UEFA reinforces concerns that have existed since the case first emerged.
Explaining the club’s position, the statement read,
“The club has informed UEFA of the existence of relevant evidence that conclusively reinforces the indications already known from the beginning about the existence of prolonged, opaque payments lacking any verifiable justification, made by Barcelona to the former vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, José María Enríquez Negreira, through different corporate structures.”
The club argues that the alleged payments raise serious questions regarding the integrity of sporting competitions and believes the matter should continue to be examined by UEFA.
Urging UEFA to resume disciplinary proceedings
Beyond presenting the information, Real Madrid have also directly called for UEFA to take action.
According to the club, the alleged facts represent a threat to the fundamental principles that underpin sporting competition. Addressing that concern, the statement continued,
“Real Madrid emphasises that these events, from the perspective of sports disciplinary law, constitute a systemic risk of the utmost seriousness to the integrity of competitions, by demonstrating the existence of a structure of undue influence over the refereeing body, incompatible with the essential principles of competitive equality, neutrality, impartiality and unpredictability of the sporting result.”
Real Madrid also made clear that they are dissatisfied with the lack of progress regarding UEFA’s disciplinary process.
“Real Madrid has urged the immediate resumption of the disciplinary proceedings initiated by UEFA, considering it unacceptable that this situation has been prolonged,” the statement added.
Simply put, Real Madrid, through their letter, have asked UEFA to examine the matter again and determine whether further sporting measures are necessary.
Real Madrid are back in action tomorrow in La Liga as they take on Elche at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero on Matchday 6.
The Merengues go into the game on the back of a solid 4-1 win over Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabeu and will be eager to build on that, especially with the Madrid derby coming up later in the week.
Ahead of the trip to Elche, Jose Mourinho has announced the squad list of players that will be at his disposal for the game tomorrow night.
There are no new returns to the squad as Real Madrid continue to be without Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, and Rodrygo Goes for the game.
Mourinho could look to make changes to his starting lineup, keeping an eye on the derby at the weekend, which could potentially open the doors for someone like Aurelien Tchouameni to start, having been eased back into the thick of things after return from injury.
There could be some rotations in defence as well, with the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Trent Alexander-Arnold hoping to get some action on the pitch.
It remains to be seen if Yan Diomande starts another game after featuring from the get-go against Rayo at the weekend, especially considering that Arda Guler has been a key player for Mourinho’s team.
Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., and Jude Bellingham have started all matches so far and it will be interesting to see if one or all of them are given a break with an eye on the derby.
