Real Madrid cemented their position as leaders of La Liga heading into the international break courtesy of a statement 4-0 win over CA Osasuna on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It was a near-complete display from Real Madrid, as Carlo Ancelotti pointed out after the game, as the Merengues were solid in defence, strong in midfield, and very effective in attack.

The victory at the Bernabeu meant that Real Madrid have not lost any of their last 16 matches against Osasuna in La Liga (W11 D5) since a 0-1 defeat in January 2011 – their longest unbeaten run against the Pamploba-based in the competition.

The resounding victory also means that Real Madrid now have the most goals (20) in La Liga this season, have conceded the least number of goals (6) while Bellingham and Joselu lead the scoring charts in the competition with 8 and 5 goals, respectively.

It was an overall team performance from Los Blancos against Jagoba Arrasate’s men, but one player who stood out once again was Jude Bellingham.

Continuing his excellent start to life as a Real Madrid player, the 20-year-old scored a brace against Osasuna last afternoon.

By doing so, Bellingham has scored eight goals after his first eight La Liga games, the most by a Real Madrid player after his first eight games in the competition since Cristiano Ronaldo in December 2009 (7).

Apart from Bellingham, Vinicius Jr and Joselu also got on the scoresheet for Real Madrid against Osasuna on Saturday.

It was Joselu’s fifth La Liga goal this season for the Merengues, which meant that he is now one of three Spanish players to score 5+ goals with Real Madrid in his first nine La Liga matches in a single season in the 21st Century, the other two being Raul Gonzalez and Javier Portillo.

The only blemish on the performance against Osasuna would be the penalty that Joselu missed late in the game.

It meant that since January 2022, Real Madrid have failed to score from nine of their 24 penalty kicks in La Liga (37%).

Just in: Real Madrid’s defensive target picks up fresh injury

Real Madrid are in active negotiations with LOSC Lille for the transfer of Leny Yoro. After weeks of impasse, the club appear to have made some ground in the race to sign the Frenchman.

However, should the Yoro deal fall through in the coming weeks, Real Madrid have identified Lazio’s Mario Gila as the ideal alternative.

Formerly of RM Castilla, Gila currently plies his trade for Lazio and has emerged as a key defensive lynchpin for the Italian outfit, impressing onlookers with his technique and discipline.

Mario Gila picks up fresh injury

However, in a major development, it appears Mario Gila has picked up a fresh injury during training, reports Diario AS.

In the pre-season camp at Auronzo di Cadore, Gila appears to have fractured his left foot and could be out for several weeks.

Lazio confirmed the defender’s injury, stating, “Mario Gila underwent clinical and instrumental examinations which revealed a fracture of the phalanx of the big toe of his left foot, suffered during training.”

Gila has started taking the appropriate treatment and the extent of his injury will be known soon. However, as things stand, the defender could be out for at least the next few weeks.

What does this mean for Real Madrid?

Mario Gila’s fresh injury setback is sure to dwindle any hopes of a potential return to Real Madrid this summer.

In any case, Gila’s chances of returning to Santiago Bernabeu were slim given that Real Madrid have finally made some ground in the deal to sign top defensive target Leny Yoro.

Los Blancos, though, would have liked having someone like Gila available as an alternative, especially with LOSC Lille still demanding a fortune for the Frenchman.

Unfortunately, that might not be an option anymore, no thanks to Gila’s injury. The club, though, will keep a close eye on the Spaniard’s injury situation, knowing he could return to fitness before the end of the summer break.
