David Alaba’s ACL tear during Real Madrid’s 4-1 win against Villarreal has forced Los Blancos to alter their January transfer market strategy altogether and if a report from SPORT is to be believed, they have put four defenders on their agenda while also considering a possible loan signing.

The outlet claims that the likes of Goncalo Inacio of Sporting, Antonio Silva of Benfica, Willian Pacho of Eintracht Frankfurt and Giorgio Scalvini of Atalanta have made it to the list.

Right now, the team from the Spanish capital is expected to actively monitor the centre-back market, prioritizing qualities such as youth, affordability, and overall skill.

With Alaba now facing a season-ending cruciate fracture, the club is set to further intensify its efforts in scouting and tracking potential candidates for the crucial centre-back position.

The aim is to secure a talented and promising player who not only meets the team’s immediate needs but also aligns with the club’s long-term vision.

Possible hurdles

Madrid have extensively analyzed Inacio, a promising candidate playing in Portugal. While his release clause is a considerable €60 million, Sporting have expressed flexibility in the collection terms. The young defender could be acquired for €45 million upfront and an additional €15 million through variable bonuses.

Meanwhile, Antonio Silva’s market value hovers around €45 million, with his release clause set at a steep €100 million. Obtaining him through this method entails a significant financial commitment.

On the other hand, Scalvini is currently a sought-after centre-back in Serie A. Standing at an impressive 6’3”, his versatility allows deployment in both central positions. Remarkably, his price remains reasonable, not exceeding €50 million.

Lastly, Willian Pacho, the Ecuadorian international, possesses a strong left foot and has been making a notable impact within the Frankfurt team. Despite Frankfurt’s reputation as a selling club, which has consistently fostered a solid relationship with Madrid in recent years, Eintracht demonstrated their commitment by investing €11 million in the South American defender.

This significant investment suggests that Pacho’s market value is poised to surpass €40 million in the foreseeable future.

Speaking in an interview with Sport BILD (h/t AS), Germany legend Michael Ballack has claimed that Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz is ready to play for Real Madrid.

Wirtz is a player that Real Madrid have been closely monitoring for a while now, with the German sensation being seen as a long-term replacement for Toni Kroos, who announced his retirement yesterday.

A move for Wirtz is being planned for the summer of 2025 and Ballack believes that the Bundesliga title winner with Leverkusen is ready for the big move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Wirtz is ready for Real Madrid,” said Ballack.

“In terms of football, Wirtz can definitely play for Real Madrid. You can also see it in Jude Bellingham after his move from BVB: when you play with even better players, you become even better,” he added.

Wirtz has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen that runs until the summer of 2027. As things stand, the new German champions have no intentions of selling their prized asset this year.

However, there appears to be an acceptance that the German international will be on the move in 2025.

Other top clubs like Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also understood to be interested, but Real Madrid are likely to beat them in the race should it come down to that next year.

A move for Wirtz, though, could cost in excess of €100 million for Real Madrid should they do indeed decide to proceed with his signing next year.
