Injury update: Real Madrid defender is now fit, will travel for Spanish Super Cup with team

Real Madrid have had terrible luck with injuries all season, with the backbone of their defence all picking up ACL tears in the same season.

It started with Thibaut Courtois in preseason before Eder Militao suffered the same fate first day of the season, and eventually David Alaba, too, tore his ligament against Villarreal before the Christmas break.

Carlo Ancelotti has also had to shuffle the midfield and full-back roles an awful bit. Ferland Mendy, especially, has already picked up two injuries. The first one ruled him out for six games, and the second one for three.

According to Miguel Diaz, though, Mendy is now fit, though, and is expected to travel to Saudi Arabia with Real Madrid tomorrow as Los Blancos take on Atletico Madrid for the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals. They will face one of Osasuna or Barcelona should they progress.

Carlo Ancelotti will have four absences, though, three of which aforementioned due to the ACL tear. The fourth one comes in the form of Lucas Vazquez, who picked up an injury last week that will keep him out for nearly three weeks.

As far as Mendy goes, Fran Garcia has done a bang-up job to replace the Frenchman, and possibly even improved on the left-back position, even though he is not Ancelotti’s first-choice.

He has four assists to his name in 14 appearances this season, out of which just nine have been starts. This is one more than how many Mendy has had in La Liga since signing for the club in 2019.

Speaking in an interview with Sport BILD (h/t AS), Germany legend Michael Ballack has claimed that Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz is ready to play for Real Madrid.

Wirtz is a player that Real Madrid have been closely monitoring for a while now, with the German sensation being seen as a long-term replacement for Toni Kroos, who announced his retirement yesterday.

A move for Wirtz is being planned for the summer of 2025 and Ballack believes that the Bundesliga title winner with Leverkusen is ready for the big move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Wirtz is ready for Real Madrid,” said Ballack.

“In terms of football, Wirtz can definitely play for Real Madrid. You can also see it in Jude Bellingham after his move from BVB: when you play with even better players, you become even better,” he added.

Wirtz has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen that runs until the summer of 2027. As things stand, the new German champions have no intentions of selling their prized asset this year.

However, there appears to be an acceptance that the German international will be on the move in 2025.

Other top clubs like Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also understood to be interested, but Real Madrid are likely to beat them in the race should it come down to that next year.

A move for Wirtz, though, could cost in excess of €100 million for Real Madrid should they do indeed decide to proceed with his signing next year.
