Real Madrid’s long list of injuries continues to grow as David Alaba is the recent entrant after picking up an ACL tear against Villarreal, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

During that same game, Ferland Mendy suffered from a problem in his right leg, and had to be substituted out at half-time, for Fran Garcia, who ended up assisting Brahim Diaz for the third goal of the game.

Mendy was expected to undergo tests today, but reports claimed that the player left without undergoing them, and will return tomorrow to undergo an MRI.

As such, MARCA report that he is a doubt for the clash against Deportivo Alaves on Thursday night. It is the last Spanish gameweek of 2023, after which teams and players will break for Christmas and New Year’s before reconvening first week 2024.

Mendy has already picked up one long injury this season, where he missed six games for Madrid, but has been a risk throughout the season with his knocks.

However, with David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga out, what are Madrid’s options for the left-back spot?

Fran Garcia deserves consistency

Fran Garcia has four assists for Madrid this season, which is as many as what Mendy has in the league across his five seasons at the club so far. He is yet to register a single assist all season, but is Carlo Ancelotti’s first choice for that role.

Since Alaba is out for the season, and Camavinga is not expected to return until February according to his timeline, Garcia could get some much-overdue consistency at the left-back spot.

Ancelotti could also make do with Tchouameni in central defence, and Nacho at left-back, but it seems unlikely that will be his first-choice move.

Either way, Mendy is expected to be back after the break by all means. However, a solid performance this week against Alaves could really shake up things for Garcia’s future.

After unveiling the final squad for France for the upcoming European Championship, coach Didier Deschamps appeared in front of the media to discuss the nation’s preparations for the tournament.

Deschamps was notably asked about Kylian Mbappe and his potential move to Real Madrid in the coming summer.

Deschamps on Mbappe announcement

When asked when Real Madrid may announce the signing of Mbappe, the French coach replied (h/t L’Equipe), “They will decide when it’s time to make it official. As far as possible, I will adapt to the squad.”

This comes on the back of earlier reports which claim that Real Madrid are desperate to announce the signing of Mbappe before the start of Euro 2024.

The coveted tournament begins June 14, though France’s opening game is on June 18 as they take on Austria in the city of Dusseldorf.

Deschamps also dismissed concerns over Mbappe’s form, stating, “You don’t find Kylian Mbappé in good shape? He only scored 44 goals in the season. It’s true that he could have done better.”

Deschamps on Tchouameni’s fitness

As things stand, a total of three Real Madrid players are a part of the France squad for the European Championship.

One of them is Aurelien Tchouameni, who picked up a knock earlier this month which could keep him out of the upcoming Champions League final.

Deschamps, though, is not worried about his fitness and is hopeful of having the midfielder back for the Euros.

“Tchouaméni? I’m not worried. The deadline is too short for the UCL final but for the Euro it’s more than doable,” he said.
