‘It’s about millimetres’ – Bayern Munich ace names key aspect that will decide Real Madrid clash

Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website, Bayern Munich veteran Thomas Muller has outlined what he thinks will be the deciding factor during their clash against Real Madrid this week.

Bayern Munich lock horns with Real Madrid in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

The first leg at the Allianz Arena was an entertaining encounter which ended in a 2-2 draw, leaving everything to be played for this week.

And Muller is of the opinion that whichever team is more clinical could end up clinching the tie at the Bernabeu.

“It’ll be an even game, on a knife’s edge. A lot in football comes down to being clinical. We also had two big chances in the second half against Stuttgart when it was 1-1. If you put chances away, you win,” said Muller.

“If not, you lose. That’s what it’ll come down to. It’s about millimetres, whether we’re clinical and can take them in the moments where we create our chances. That’s it.”

On what he is expecting from Real Madrid on the day of the match, the German icon remarked:

“There are a lot of sides to Real. They can drop back, have no problem also defending. But they know that they have excellent players on the counter. That concept has been seen to work enough times.

“It’s no coincidence that they’ve constantly been in the semi-finals in recent years. Real are so dangerous, but you can also play against them. Whether they’re beatable for us will be decided by whether we can put the ball away or not.”

Looking forward to the Bernabeu experience

On Wednesday, Muller will be playing his sixth game at the Santiago Bernabeu and the Bayern Munich legend insisted that he was looking forward to the experience now that the stadium had been renovated.

“I’m excited to see what it’ll be like. The stadium has just been renovated. What fascinates me so much about the Bernabeu is that it’s right in the centre of the city,” stated Muller.

“You’re just in some neighbourhood, go round the next block and suddenly there’s an 80,000-seater stadium there. Football is really important in Madrid. You see that as well at games like this. For me personally, it simulates your performance.”

At the same time, Muller also talked about the atmosphere at the Allianz Arena last week and was full of praise for the fans, saying:

It was very special. We’ve often had a similar huge atmosphere, especially in decisive Champions League knockout games. But the welcome at the stadium in particular was special. It was so loud – you could feel all the enthusiasm and energy.

“We were pushed and boosted. It was really great what the Bayern fans put together. It’s a shame we didn’t win, but the performance was at least good. Now it’s about getting over the line in Madrid.”

A recent report from Defensa Central has revealed that Real Madrid are interested in signing Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich, hoping to secure the deal for a fee between €30 million and €35 million.

Currently, Real Madrid’s main focus is on their upcoming Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.

As a result, they have not been concentrating much on their summer transfer plans. However, despite this distraction, their interest in Davies has been reignited, marking another step towards bringing him to Madrid.

It is said that Davies remains a key target for Real Madrid and the club is strategising to make a move for him, believing that the time and situation are on their side.

It is to be noted that Davies’ contract with Bayern Munich ends in 2025, and there are no indications that he plans to renew it. Real Madrid are banking on this uncertainty to pressure Bayern into selling him.

Bayern ready to part ways with Davies

It is said that Bayern have made their stance clear regarding Davies: he must either extend his contract or be sold this summer.

Davies has not yet made his decision known, although Bayern suspect he is leaning towards leaving. He hasn’t responded to their offer of a salary increase, which would pay him around €13 million gross per year.

Bayern are unwilling to raise their offer and are keen to resolve this situation quickly to plan for the next season.

Real Madrid are loving this drama

As days pass, Davies’ market value decreases slightly due to his inconsistent season, marked by injuries and patches of poor performance.

Bayern are under pressure to sell him to avoid losing him for free later, which has led to a reduced asking price.

Real Madrid are aware of this situation and remember Davies’ impressive performance in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals at Santiago Bernabeu, where he scored a spectacular goal.

Real Madrid are in no rush

For now, Real Madrid are aiming to sign Davies for as little as possible within the €30 million to €35 million range.

They are in no rush since they already have two capable left-backs in their squad—Ferland Mendy and Fran García—and are considering buying back Miguel Gutierrez. Thus, securing a new left-back isn’t an urgent need for them.

Nonetheless, Real Madrid are committed to acquiring the Canadian star. Their scouting team has long recommended him, and negotiations have been ongoing since last summer.

There is already a verbal agreement between Davies and Real Madrid, indicating that the club’s interest is serious and well-planned.
