Former Real Madrid forward Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez remembered the time he spent with Cristiano Ronaldo at the club, saying that the current Al Nassr superstar is a phenomenal presence in the locker room and he has never seen anyone like him.

The 35-year-old forward, who spent the 2014-15 season on loan at Real Madrid, ended his tenure with nine goals and five assists in 31 across all competitions. In the same season, Ronaldo tallied his career-best figure of 61 goals for the Los Blancos.

When speaking about the Portuguese’s influence, the Mexican said that Ronaldo is a very complicated person. He may look arrogant on the outside, but he is one of the most honest people he has ever met.

“Cris is phenomenal in a locker room and also in his way of being,” the former Manchester United forward told MARCA.

“I don’t think I have met or seen a player [like him]. I can confirm it, who has come out to say that Cristiano Ronaldo is a difficult or complicated person,” he added.

Chicharito said that although Ronaldo is very competitive, as a teammate he is very helpful.

“Cris is Cris. We know his personality and competitiveness, but as a teammate, they are also one of the things that I have taken away because he and I had talks that would not have happened if he had not allowed them either.

“People see Cristiano Ronaldo in a very arrogant and very contemptuous way, but I think he is a very honest, very frank person, and he is not going to lie to you,” he said.

About his time at Real Madrid

Chicharito’s Real Madrid tenure was largely marred by substitute appearances followed by unfortunate injuries. When speaking about it, he said,

“I have always divided it as the first six months were very complicated because I played practically nothing. I played very little.

“Some unfortunate injuries arose and I was given the opportunity in the second period of the semester, which was extraordinary and something unique, memorable.”

However it may seem, the Mexican said that the time he spent at the club was like a dream.

“My time at Real Madrid was something unique, special, indescribable, like a dream,” he concluded.

Luka Modric is set to stay with Real Madrid for another season, meaning he will have played more seasons with Vinicius Jr. (7) than he did with Cristiano Ronaldo (6).

Feeling old yet? We thought so too!

Modric joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2012 after four seasons with Tottenham Hotspur. On the other hand, Vinicius Jr. joined Real Madrid in 2018.

By the end of the 2023/24 season, Modric and Vinicius will have spent six seasons together. This is the same number of seasons Modric played with Cristiano Ronaldo, who was at Madrid from 2009 to 2018.

However, with Modric set to stay for another season, he will surpass that, playing more seasons with Vinicius than with Ronaldo, the club’s all-time top scorer.

A new contract for Modric

It is important to note that Real Madrid and Modric have reached an agreement in principle for his contract renewal for another year.

At 38, Modric’s contract was set to expire at the end of the current season. For a while, it seemed the Croatian star might leave Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

However, things have changed recently, and Real Madrid have decided to offer him a new contract.

Interestingly, Real Madrid have also offered a renewal to Toni Kroos with club president Florentino Perez personally involved in the negotiations.

Modric and Kroos will continue

Reports suggest that Modric has agreed to the new proposal, with an agreement in principle now in place. It is also expected that Kroos will accept his offer, meaning Real Madrid will keep both veteran players for another season.

The Croatian was reportedly willing to accept a pay cut and a reduced role in the team to continue playing for Real Madrid. This flexibility may have sped up the agreement process.

His willingness to adapt to a reduced role and accept a pay cut has likely influenced the club’s decision to renew his contract for one more year.
