Jose Mourinho finally has full Real Madrid squad as five World Cup stars return
Jose Mourinho has had to navigate his first pre-season back as Real Madrid manager without many of his first-team stars and new signings.
With Los Blancos enjoying significant representation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and many of their players making a deep run in the competition, they have been on extended holidays since.
This has forced Mourinho to adapt, work with the players he had with him and also trust academy starlets like Alexis Ciria, who have caught the eye.
Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, Mourinho will finally have his full Real Madrid squad available for pre-season, with the club’s last five World Cup participants returning to Valdebebas on Monday.
Five internationals return
Marc Cucurella, Kylian Mbappe, Aurelien Tchouameni, Ibrahima Konate and Jude Bellingham are all due to report back as Madrid begin the fifth week of their summer preparations.
The five players will first undergo the usual medical checks before joining training at the club’s facilities.
For Cucurella and Konate, it will also mark their first proper session as Real Madrid players after joining the club earlier in the summer.
Cucurella returns as a newly crowned world champion with Spain and as one of Madrid’s biggest additions of the window, while Konate will begin integrating into Mourinho’s defensive set-up.
Work to do before La Liga opener
The returning internationals are naturally behind their team-mates in terms of pre-season rhythm after extended breaks following the World Cup.
Mourinho’s immediate challenge will be getting them physically ready without pushing too hard too quickly.
Madrid still have two important friendlies before the competitive season begins.
They face Deportivo La Coruña in the Teresa Herrera Trophy on 12 August before travelling to Germany to play Schalke 04 on 16 August.
Those matches should provide useful minutes for Mbappe, Bellingham, Cucurella and the others as they build towards match fitness.
Mourinho can finally start shaping his XI
This is the stage of pre-season where Mourinho can finally begin working with something close to his genuine first-choice team.
Until now, although there have been some patterns to pick up on, it still is not clear how Mourinho’s Madrid are going to look the second time around.
It is also worth remembering that, for all his reputation, Jose has not exactly set the stage alight in recent seasons as a manager.
Thus, it will be so important for him to hit the ground running at Real Madrid, where the tune can change from comforting to ruthless in a matter of matches.
Real Madrid open their La Liga campaign against Espanyol on 22 August, giving Mourinho just under two weeks to integrate the final arrivals.
It remains to be seen how they get on and who eventually enters Mourinho’s preferred XI in a couple of weeks.

Real Madrid’s Dumfries opens up on facing former club Inter Milan: ‘A very special match’
Real Madrid and Inter Milan produced a thrilling and dramatic contest at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night, with the hosts eventually securing a 2-1 victory in their opening UEFA Champions League league-phase fixture.
First half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde proved to be enough for Los Blancos, although Inter put up an excellent fight and will feel unlucky to have returned with nothing to show for their efforts.
As for Real Madrid, they had enough chances to win by a more comfortable margin, but found themselves under pressure during the final stages, especially after spurning several goalscoring opportunities, while Inter pulled a goal back.
A special night for Dumfries
That assessment was shared by Jose Mourinho after the match, while summer signing Denzel Dumfries also acknowledged the difficulties Real Madrid faced against his former club.
For Dumfries, the evening was particularly meaningful because of his five years with the Nerazzurri before he joined the Merengues this past summer.
“It was a very special match for me. I met up with all my friends again, the people I played with for five years. I love them all very much, but in the end I’m happy that we won,” he said, as quoted by Defensa Central.
The Dutchman also recognised the quality of the opposition.
“I’d say very well. I know Inter’s qualities. They have very strong players, but so do we. It was an incredible game. I think we deserved it, but Inter are undoubtedly a very strong team,” he added.
Dumfries’ comments underlined the challenge Mourinho’s side faced, particularly with Madrid missing several important midfielders.
Settling in well
Dumfries joined Real Madrid as a replacement for former captain Dani Carvajal, who left the club as a free agent at the end of the last season.
The 30-year-old right-back was signed for a fee of €20 million at the request of Mourinho and has, so far, settled in nicely at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Netherlands international has started four of Real Madrid’s five matches so far in the 2026/27 season, suggesting that he might be ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order under Mourinho.
