La Liga was once again subjected to criticism by Vinicius Junior when the Real Madrid attacker called out the Spanish footballing authority for their inaction after he was racially abused by Real Valladolid fans.

The incident happened during Real Madrid’s game against Valladolid on Friday, where the winger was subjected to insults from the opposition fans. It prompted the player to call out La Liga on social media, for their inaction.

La Liga, though, have been quick to respond to Vinicius and has recently confirmed they have lodged an official complaint to the authorities.

They have confirmed that a criminal charge has been filed with the Valladolid Magistrates’ Courts, along with audiovisual evidence of Vinicius being a subject of racial insults.

In addition, La Liga has asked the Magistrates’ office to transfer the complaint to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Hate Crimes. A report of the racial insults has also been submitted to the RFEF Competition Committee and State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance in Sport.

The two bodies are expected to observe the incident from the evidence gathered and assess the sanction.

Moreover, La Liga has promised to increase their efforts to curb racism in the stadium. As part of their efforts, they have vowed to increase La Liga Integrity Officers in matches where there is a risk of racial insults.

This is being done in order to maximise the detection of such events, which has no place in sport, said the statement.

In addition to an increased number of officers, La Liga will broadcast messages about combating racism over the public address system and advertising hoardings in matches where there is a chance of racial abuse.

In the statement, La Liga doubled down and affirmed its objective of obtaining ‘zero violence’ and removing xenophobia and intolerance.

This is not the first time Vinicius has been subjected to racist chants. The Real Madrid superstar was targeted by rival fans ahead of the Madrilenian derby against Atletico earlier this season.

Ancelotti prefers retaining Real Madrid star over signing 23-year-old full-back

As we close in on the summer transfer window, Real Madrid are set to face a massive dilemma in the left-back position.

The club’s desire to sign Alphonso Davies has been well-documented, with Los Blancos keen on taking advantage of the market opportunity.

Real Madrid’s initial idea was to sign Davies as a direct upgrade over Ferland Mendy in the left-back position.

However, Mendy’s superb performances during the second half of the campaign have now led to ideological differences between the club and the coaching staff, led by Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti chooses Mendy over Davies

A recent report from Sergio Gomez and Alfredo Matilla (h/t Madrid Zone) now suggests Carlo Ancelotti is unequivocally supporting the prolonged stay of Ferland Mendy.

This comes shortly after the Italian tactician proclaimed Mendy as the best left-back in the world. The defender has also received praise from his French national team captain and future Real Madrid teammate Kylian Mbappe.

As per the report, Ancelotti, if given the choice, would prefer to renew the contract of Mendy over acquiring the services of Davies, who is already into the final 12 months of his contract at Bayern Munich.

Ferland Mendy himself will have his Real Madrid contract expire by 2025. There have been no talks of a renewal either, despite his excellent performances during the 2024/25 campaign.

It remains to be seen whether or not Ancelotti’s open support for the Frenchman will have any bearing on the club’s plans.

Another potential tailwind for Mendy could come in the form of Davies potentially staying at Bayern, at least until 2025. It would delay Real Madrid’s pursuit, thus giving Bayern more time to try and convince the Canadian international to prolong his stay in Bavaria.
