Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on links with Real Madrid target Mbappe: “I have no clue”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that he does not know anything about Kylian Mbappe’s links with the Reds, saying that he is not involved in the move by any means.

Mbappe’s impending move to Real Madrid is right on the verge of completion. The French World Cup winner is set to sign for the Los Blancos on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain and he is doing so while agreeing to a relatively substandard contract.

This means that the young forward will not be the highest-paid player in the Real Madrid team, with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr. both playing on a better contract.

As such, for several months before deciding on Real Madrid, Mbappe was constantly linked with Liverpool and while speaking about it, Klopp has said that signing the 25-year-old would be tricky not just for Liverpool but also for most of the other teams.

“I have no clue. I am not involved in that, but I can tell you that I would be surprised,” said Klopp, as quoted by journalist Fabrizio Romano.

“It would be tricky for most of the top clubs I know – wages, signing fee,” he added.

As reported before, the 25-year-old forward is set to cost Real Madrid a whopping €500 million across five years. In order to achieve this financial backing, Madrid had to make a lot of adjustments, and their successful business model allowed them to do so.

As of today, PSG are well-versed with Mbappe’s decision to leave for Real Madrid and in all fairness, they always anticipated him to join the team from the Spanish capital. For the last two years, they have only been stalling the inevitable by showering him with money.

This time around, Mbappe’s willingness to speak with Madrid officials has been appreciated by the team as they see a sign of interest in joining Real Madrid. While nothing in this regard is official yet, the transfer is just about time.

After unveiling the final squad for France for the upcoming European Championship, coach Didier Deschamps appeared in front of the media to discuss the nation’s preparations for the tournament.

Deschamps was notably asked about Kylian Mbappe and his potential move to Real Madrid in the coming summer.

Deschamps on Mbappe announcement

When asked when Real Madrid may announce the signing of Mbappe, the French coach replied (h/t L’Equipe), “They will decide when it’s time to make it official. As far as possible, I will adapt to the squad.”

This comes on the back of earlier reports which claim that Real Madrid are desperate to announce the signing of Mbappe before the start of Euro 2024.

The coveted tournament begins June 14, though France’s opening game is on June 18 as they take on Austria in the city of Dusseldorf.

Deschamps also dismissed concerns over Mbappe’s form, stating, “You don’t find Kylian Mbappé in good shape? He only scored 44 goals in the season. It’s true that he could have done better.”

Deschamps on Tchouameni’s fitness

As things stand, a total of three Real Madrid players are a part of the France squad for the European Championship.

One of them is Aurelien Tchouameni, who picked up a knock earlier this month which could keep him out of the upcoming Champions League final.

Deschamps, though, is not worried about his fitness and is hopeful of having the midfielder back for the Euros.

“Tchouaméni? I’m not worried. The deadline is too short for the UCL final but for the Euro it’s more than doable,” he said.
