England, despite being one of the favourites to win the European Championships, have not started the competition with the force they would have fancied.

Gareth Southgate’s side appear dysfunctional as a unit and have been lacklustre in the final third as evidenced in their back-to-back draws against Denmark and Slovenia.

While players have disappointed across the field, there has been a special emphasis on Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham who has been struggling to stand out in the tournament.

The youngster, after all, scored the winning goal in the team’s opening clash against Serbia but has been far from his best apart from the solitary contribution.

Writing in his blog on The Times (h/t Mirror) recently, Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney voiced concerns over the Real Madrid sensation’s impact on the field, body language and struggles in the tournament.

“Watching England against Slovenia, I focused on Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane to try to understand how they are working together,” he began, before explaining the takeaways from his observations.

“Jude’s body language told you a lot. Three or four times in the first half he could not hide his frustration. He was trying to lead things by running past Harry to pressure the ball, the Slovenians would pass around him and he’d find nobody was backing up his run,” he said on the Real Madrid starlet.

Giving his two cents on the youngster’s situation and the frustration he exhibited, the legend said,

“For an attacking player that’s one of the worst feelings you can have. He was turning around to look at others and throwing his arms up. Body language like that sends a message to the fans, to his teammates, to the manager.”

Rooney then went on to add how he faced similar situations during his days as a player and how he saw Bellingham’s situation turning if care was not taken.

“I’ve been there. I know exactly the position he’s in. I found myself in that headspace many times in international football, and at certain points in my club career.”

“I just hope the frustration doesn’t boil over to the point where he gets a red card or does something stupid and gets himself injured,” he added.

Finally, the Plymouth Argyle manager revealed that, in his opinion, Bellingham was not far off from an impulsive mistake that could cost him and his team.

“Against Slovenia, it looked as if he was getting close. Throughout this tournament, it has looked as if he has been trying too hard, and when you try too hard, you make decisions you don’t normally make.”

Real Madrid are in active negotiations with LOSC Lille for the transfer of Leny Yoro. After weeks of impasse, the club appear to have made some ground in the race to sign the Frenchman.

However, should the Yoro deal fall through in the coming weeks, Real Madrid have identified Lazio’s Mario Gila as the ideal alternative.

Formerly of RM Castilla, Gila currently plies his trade for Lazio and has emerged as a key defensive lynchpin for the Italian outfit, impressing onlookers with his technique and discipline.

Mario Gila picks up fresh injury

However, in a major development, it appears Mario Gila has picked up a fresh injury during training, reports Diario AS.

In the pre-season camp at Auronzo di Cadore, Gila appears to have fractured his left foot and could be out for several weeks.

Lazio confirmed the defender’s injury, stating, “Mario Gila underwent clinical and instrumental examinations which revealed a fracture of the phalanx of the big toe of his left foot, suffered during training.”

Gila has started taking the appropriate treatment and the extent of his injury will be known soon. However, as things stand, the defender could be out for at least the next few weeks.

What does this mean for Real Madrid?

Mario Gila’s fresh injury setback is sure to dwindle any hopes of a potential return to Real Madrid this summer.

In any case, Gila’s chances of returning to Santiago Bernabeu were slim given that Real Madrid have finally made some ground in the deal to sign top defensive target Leny Yoro.

Los Blancos, though, would have liked having someone like Gila available as an alternative, especially with LOSC Lille still demanding a fortune for the Frenchman.

Unfortunately, that might not be an option anymore, no thanks to Gila’s injury. The club, though, will keep a close eye on the Spaniard’s injury situation, knowing he could return to fitness before the end of the summer break.
