Mbappe has been Barcelona’s nightmare even before signing with Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe, now officially confirmed as the first signing for Real Madrid, is already a figure despised by the Barcelona fans.

This strong dislike does not require him to wear Real Madrid’s jersey or to make any provocative statements. He does not even need to celebrate a goal in a way that might be seen as disrespectful.

It is to be noted that the French forward will be arriving at Santiago Bernabeu with a reputation that has already made him unpopular among Barcelona’s supporters for quite some time.

This feeling of animosity extends to some of Barcelona’s players, who view Mbappe’s attitude and behaviour as unsportsmanlike as his actions during his victories with PSG at Camp Nou and Montjuic suggest that this mutual dislike is quite strong.

Mbappe’s history with Barcelona

The tension between Mbappe and Barcelona likely began in 2017. At that time, Barcelona chose not to pursue signing him, even though the forward, who was then playing for Monaco, was open to the idea.

Despite Mbappe having a childhood affection for Madrid, he seemed to fit well into Barcelona’s sporting plans and was considering a move there.

However, he decided to join PSG, a club with which Barcelona has developed a fierce modern rivalry, sometimes more intense than its historic rivalry with Real Madrid.

Kylian Mbappe vs Barcelona

It seems that Barcelona’s rejection left a mark on Mbappe. Whenever he faced Barcelona, he exhibited a more controversial and antagonistic side, which he rarely showed in other matches.

In the first leg of the round of 16 in the 2020-21 Champions League, he scored three goals in a crushing 4-1 victory over Barcelona at an empty Camp Nou due to the pandemic.

This result led to Barcelona’s elimination after a 1-1 draw in the second leg. During that match, Mbappe even had a heated moment with Jordi Alba, which many saw as unsportsmanlike.

More recently, in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, another 4-1 victory, this time in the second leg at Montjuic, he showcased similar behaviour.

The forward scored two goals and celebrated provocatively in the tunnel after the match, which sparked outrage among those present.

This led to a confrontation where Gavi, who was not playing due to an injury, along with Fermin Lopez, confronted Mbappe in anger.

Overall, in four matches against Barcelona, Mbappe has netted six goals and on two occasions, he has eliminated the Blaugrana from the Champions League.

Real Madrid are set to welcome two new stars this summer, Kylian Mbappe and Endrick, but the Merengues are keen on further bolstering their squad.

Owing to the embarrassment of riches Real Madrid possess in midfield, replacing Toni Kroos with a new signing in midfield is not seen as an immediate priority.

Nonetheless, interesting opportunities will invariably be evaluated closely and it appears the name of Adrien Rabiot has entered the club’s crosshairs.

Real Madrid not the only ones interested

But, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Real Madrid face stiff competition from Premier League clubs and Saudi Arabian teams in their pursuit of midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

The French midfielder is set to become a free agent if he chooses not to renew his contract with Juventus, a decision that seems increasingly likely.

Known for his technical prowess and versatility, Rabiot excels at playing multiple roles in midfield and notably thriving as a goal threat with late runs inside the opposition box that tend to catch opponents off guard.

While Real Madrid have no shortage of quality in midfield, Dani Ceballos’ exit could pave the way for the 29-year-old to secure a signing for Los Blancos.

However, Real Madrid would have to outmanoeuvre both the financial prowess of Saudi Arabian teams and the competitive allure of Premier League clubs to secure Rabiot’s signature.

On top of that, Juventus are also not giving up on their efforts to try and renew the contract of the French international.

In any case, Rabiot is unlikely to be a priority target for the club but they will be sure to keep a close eye on how his situation develops.
