Real Madrid strengthened their grip at the top of the La Liga standings, after securing a 1-0 victory over Sevilla on Sunday night at the Santiago Bernabeu.

With Barcelona cutting down the gap on Saturday, it was crucial for Real Madrid to grab all three points for Carlo Ancelotti’s men and even though Sevilla held their own for long, a late goal from Luka Modric clinched it for the hosts.

Nacho hails Modric after win

Captain Nacho Fernandez interacted with the media after the game and praised the team’s mentality, as well as highlighting Modric for his match-winning contribution.

“We didn’t give up and fought until the end, as we often do. It was difficult to find space and we got three very important points thanks to a great goal from Luka,” said Nacho (h/t RealMadrid.com).

“We’re really happy, we knew it was going to be a tough game. Sevilla haven’t done very well in the league this year, but they’re still a very good team and they gave us a very difficult game.”

Speaking of Modric’s goal, Nacho added: “We see him every day in training and he scores a lot of goals like today’s. I’m very happy for him and that all the players are contributing to the team, that’s essential. We’re all very focused and we need to take advantage of that.”

The Real Madrid skipper also hailed club legend Sergio Ramos, who captained Sevilla last night, on his first return to the Santiago Bernabeu, saying:

“He’s a legend. He’s been my idol for so many years. It was a very special night.  I told him before the game that it was an honour to play against him, even though I’ve always preferred to have him on my team. It was a wonderful night.”

Lucas Vazquez praises team

Lucas Vazquez started at right-back for Real Madrid against Sevilla last night due to Dani Carvajal’s suspension. The veteran almost made a brilliant start after putting the ball in the back of the net, only to see it get chalked off for a foul in the buildup.

Despite that setback, despite all the absentees, Real Madrid bounced back strongly and that is something Vazquez stressed during his media interaction.

“The team showed, right from the start until the end, how hungry we were to win. We put in a great performance and created a lot of chances. We were a little unlucky in the final third, but we have to be very happy with the performance we put in,” he said.

“There were a lot of stoppages, a lot of breaks were allowed which didn’t benefit our football and made the game more difficult and ugly.”

On Modric’s match-winning moment, the right-back stated: “We’ve already seen that shot a few times. He’s a fantastic player, unbelievable. There are no more adjectives to describe what a star he is. We’re lucky to enjoy his football.”

Touching upon their unbeaten run at the Santiago Bernabeu this season, he added: “It’s a reflection of the good season we’re having. The team is really motivated and hungry to win trophies. The most difficult part is now ahead of us, but we’re very motivated to do big things.”

On the level of the squad, Vazquez said: “The level of the squad is so high. We’re showing every game that, whoever comes out and with the players we’re missing, the level of the team hasn’t dropped and that speaks very highly of all of us.”

Though disallowed Vazquez goal didn’t stop Madrid for the night, I believe the referee’s was a wrong call. Nacho kicked the ball, and it was an okay tackle. The referee demonstrated a high level of incompetence with other decisions he made in the game. I’m afraid he would not have allowed Luka’s goal if he was the one still with the whistle. Real Madrid are eager to enhance their options in central defense after deciding to not sign any defenders in the recent January transfer window.

Several players are on the club’s radar, with Lille’s promising center-back Leny Yoro most notably high on the club’s wishlist.

However, the Merengues are not turning a blind eye to their homegrown academy gems, as Rafa Marin is making a strong case for himself to join the first team dynamics next summer.

Rafa Marin strengthens his case

The 21-year-old is presently on loan at Alaves and is showcasing solid performances in the heart of defense, with Real Madrid reported to count on him next season.

Now, AS have reported that the reason for the club’s trust in Marin is his upsurge in performances at Alaves. And if Nacho Fernandez leaves, Marin will serve as the fourth central defender in the squad.

A testament to his worth to Alaves is the fact that Marin has not been benched since mid-November, demonstrating his importance in coach Luis Garcia Plaza’s defense.

With 2,282 total minutes played, he ranks as the fourth-highest on the team with the most minutes.

Against Atletico Madrid recently, Rafa Marin enjoyed a stellar outing. In addition to making 15 recoveries and 9 interceptions, he took part in 24 defensive actions. Along with winning two ground and four air duels, he only committed one foul.

An important summer for Marin

Not only is Rafa Marín returning to Real Madrid, but he is also going to represent Spain in the Olympics in Paris.

Marin was included in five of the six matches during the Euro Under-21 qualifiers because coach Santi Denia of Spain’s under-21 team greatly values his presence and height (1.91 meters).

Marin has a bright future ahead of him if all goes according to plan. His season with Alaves is sure to serve as a stepping stone for his integration into the Real Madrid first team.
