Perez calls for Real Madrid elections, trashes rumours about his health – ‘Campaigns against me and the club’
Earlier in the day, Florentino Perez had announced an unexpected press conference in the midst of growing concerns at Real Madrid.
Aside from being unable to win a single major trophy in the last two years, Real Madrid have been suffering from tensions in the dressing room and a lack of cohesion.
This has led to question marks about Perez and his ability to continue leading the club. There have also been reports of his health possibly dwindling, to which the Real Madrid president has offered a stark response.
What Perez said during the presser
First things first, the Real Madrid president was keen to dispel speculation that has been circulating about his well-being.
“Some have even told me I have terminal cancer. I want to take this opportunity to let those who have been concerned about me know that I’m still president of Real Madrid and my company, and that my health is perfect.
“I couldn’t be in both places if my health weren’t perfect. If I had cancer, as has been said, I’d have to go to a cancer centre. If I were, wouldn’t it have been all over the world?” he said (h/t MARCA).
He went on to thrash ABC for the story about his health while highlighting the way Real Madrid operate and how it is not run by one person alone.
“At Real Madrid, there isn’t just one owner; it’s the 1,000 members who make up the club. I’ve made this decision because an absurd situation has been created, provoked by campaigns against the interests of Real Madrid and against me.
“The results haven’t been the best, but in sports, you don’t always win. They’re taking advantage of the situation to attack me personally. They’re saying, ‘Where’s Florentino?’ I don’t usually speak out,” he added.
Perez also made a significant announcement during the press conference, confirming that the process for the board of directors elections will now begin.
“I have asked the electoral board to begin the process to start the elections for the board of directors, for which we, this Board of Directors, will be running,” he stated.
Continuing, he added: “I share the frustration, because we haven’t been able to win anything this year. But I have to tell you and show you that with me as president we have won 66 titles in football and basketball, including seven European Cups in football.
“I want to speak to those behind this campaign, those who operate in the shadows. Well, let them run in the elections; now they have the opportunity to do so. I am going to run to defend the interests of Real Madrid.”
It appears that despite all the recent turbulence, Perez has no intention of stepping aside and is preparing to seek a fresh mandate from the club’s membership.
In what will come as a pleasing development for fans, Fabrizio Romano reports that Real Madrid forward Rodrygo could make a comeback from his injury earlier than expected.
The 25-year-old Brazilian international has been out of action since March after suffering an ACL injury during a La Liga game against Getafe.
Due to the complete rupture of the ACL, coupled with associated meniscus damage, it was suggested that the attacker was staring at a lengthy time out on the sidelines and might not return until 2027.
In fact, the forward’s father, Eric Goes, recently stated in an interview that the Real Madrid ace could be back in February next year, just before the business end of the campaign.
Rodrygo could be back in December
However, as per the update from Romano, Rodrygo’s comeback could happen well before that expected date.
Indeed, if things continue to progress at the current rate, the 25-year-old attacker might return to action in December or by January 2027 at the latest.
This will come as a welcome boost for Jose Mourinho & co., considering that Rodrygo is a valuable player for the team.
Even though he had endured a tough spell prior to his form, the Brazilian’s versatility, work rate off the ball, and eye for a goal make him an asset.
Rodrygo eager to be back at his best
The update from Romano further states that Rodrygo feels very grateful to Real Madrid for all the help and support they have given him during this difficult phase of his career.
As such, the Brazilian international has made it a mission to return to action in the best shape possible and make an impact from the get-go.
The attacker has only recently begun working on the pitch with the ball indicating the significant progress he has made on the road to recovery.
And, if there are no setbacks, Real Madrid could recover one of their ace attackers before the end of the current year.
So far in his career, Rodrygo has made 297 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 71 goals. He has a contract with the club until 2028.
