Real Madrid midfield icon Toni Kroos will make a decision on whether he will return to the Germany national team or not in the weeks to come, reports Mario Cortegana of The Athletic.

Kroos announced his retirement from international football back in 2021, right after Die Mannschaft’s poor display at the UEFA Euro 2020.

But with the European championships this year set to be hosted by Germany and the team not doing as well as expected, there have been calls for Kroos to make a U-turn on his retirement and return to the fold.

Earlier this month, the iconic midfielder acknowledged that he was indeed thinking about returning to play for Germany, saying:

“I have to make decisions, think a lot about what I’m going to do. I don’t know if I will play in the European Championship. I’m thinking about going back to Germany but at the moment I don’t know.”

With the international break coming up in less than a month in March, it is now expected that Kroos will make a decision before then and communicate it, at least internally.

If he decides to play for Germany at the Euros, there is a chance that manager Julian Nagelsmann will call Kroos up for the upcoming international break that starts on March 14. If not, the Real Madrid legend will not be considered for selection moving forward.

Germany face France in an international friendly away from home on March 23 before taking on the Netherlands at home in Frankfurt on March 26.

Real Madrid midfielder issues fitness update ahead of UCL final – ‘It is very difficult’

Real Madrid officially played their final game of the league season this past weekend and the focus now shifts to the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund on June 1.

The Spanish champions have the glorious opportunity to secure their 15th Champions League title this on Sunday.

But heading into this clash, Real Madrid are likely to miss out on the services of one of the key players – Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Frenchman will likely be ruled out for the UCL final due to an injury incurred earlier this month.

Tchouameni on UCL final

Speaking ahead of the final, Tchouameni admitted that it would be very difficult for him to participate in the UCL final.

“I can run, I think it is very difficult to play in this final and we have more players who can be in my position. The important thing is that we are going to win this Champions League,” Tchouameni said.

The Frenchman added that he would try to help the team any way he can, stating, “If I can be the MVP from the bench, I’ll do it.”

Considered by many as the future of the Real Madrid midfield, Tchouameni has played a valuable role in the middle of the park this season.

His versatility, coupled with his ability to spread the play and put pressure on the opposition have served as key to Real Madrid’s success.

Although Tchouameni might not feature in this final, the player expressed his optimism about the Real Madrid team, adding, “I really want to play in this final, but I’m sure we will reach more finals [in coming years].”

Finally, Tchouameni expressed his happiness at Real Madrid, stating, “It’s an incredible feeling to be at Real Madrid.”

Formerly of AS Monaco, Tchouameni has featured in 88 competitive matches since joining Real Madrid in 2022. With Toni Kroos retiring, he is expected to play a crucial role for the club going forward, although not necessarily in the upcoming Champions League final.
