Journalist Fabrizio Romano has affirmed that although Real Madrid have not made any firm decision yet, they continue to discuss options to sign a new centre back in January.

David Alaba’s ACL tear during the 4-1 win over Villarreal has disrupted Real Madrid’s January transfer plans so much so that the journalist says they are also exploring the option of recalling a certain Rafa Marin from his loan move to Alaves.

“From what I am hearing, Real Madrid are still discussing the possibility of signing a new player in January. It is not guaranteed, but it is a possibility that Madrid will not stay with the same squad,” said Romano.

“It’s one of the possibilities that they might recall Rafa Marin, but it is not easy. Real Madrid are still speaking internally with Juni Calafat, with Florentino Perez, with Carlo Ancelotti and other people at the club.

“The original plan was to stay with the same squad, but after Alaba’s injury, they are now internally discussing potential January signing,” he added.

We have reported before that Real Madrid continue to monitor the situation of former defender Raphael Varane, who happens to have fallen under the card at Manchester United.

The deal, however, is not going to be easy mostly because Erik ten Hag does not want to lose a player midway through the season.

As of today, several names have been linked with Los Blancos, including Goncalo Inacio of Sporting, Antonio Silva of Benfica, Willian Pacho of Eintracht Frankfurt, and Giorgio Scalvini of Atalanta, but no discussions have panned out so far.

It is to be noted that against Alaves, Nacho was deployed alongside Antonio Rudiger, but a straight red warrants a two-match ban.

While it is not going to pose a long-term problem, another injury to any of the aforementioned would leave Madrid shorthand in defence.

Speaking in an interview with Sport BILD (h/t AS), Germany legend Michael Ballack has claimed that Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz is ready to play for Real Madrid.

Wirtz is a player that Real Madrid have been closely monitoring for a while now, with the German sensation being seen as a long-term replacement for Toni Kroos, who announced his retirement yesterday.

A move for Wirtz is being planned for the summer of 2025 and Ballack believes that the Bundesliga title winner with Leverkusen is ready for the big move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Wirtz is ready for Real Madrid,” said Ballack.

“In terms of football, Wirtz can definitely play for Real Madrid. You can also see it in Jude Bellingham after his move from BVB: when you play with even better players, you become even better,” he added.

Wirtz has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen that runs until the summer of 2027. As things stand, the new German champions have no intentions of selling their prized asset this year.

However, there appears to be an acceptance that the German international will be on the move in 2025.

Other top clubs like Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also understood to be interested, but Real Madrid are likely to beat them in the race should it come down to that next year.

A move for Wirtz, though, could cost in excess of €100 million for Real Madrid should they do indeed decide to proceed with his signing next year.
