Real Madrid beat Barcelona to sign promising goalkeeper – report

Real Madrid have finally completed the signing of young goalkeeper Ferran Quetglas from Mallorca, claims Spanish news outlet MARCA.

Madrid have been chasing Quetglas since March and had to fend off interest from some of the top clubs to acquire the 17-year-old’s services. This includes Barcelona among other suitors.

In acquiring the young stopper, Madrid put a full stop to a long negotiation that has been in the pipeline since March.

Quetglas, who has been called up to the senior team of Mallorca four times (three times in the league and one time in the Cup game) this season, has signed a two-year deal with Los Blancos.

Marca says the 17-year-old keeper will join the youth team at the moment, which will give him a much-needed taste of what is there to come.

Real Madrid have huge plans for Quetglas. The team will initially slot him at the famed Castilla to track his progress. If the blueprint that has been drawn for him is fulfilled, Madrid expect him to succeed Thibaut Courtois in goal.

At first, however, they expect him to successfully complete the training period before drawing a conclusion.

Long-term project

Madrid have been following Quetglas’ career since the very beginning. And like Madrid, even Barcelona were following his trajectory, and despite having strong connections in the Balearic area, they missed out on the opportunity.

Quetglas is considered as one of the finest young keepers Spain will have in their ranks. He has already played for the U-17 side of his national team and has also been called up to Mallorca’s first-team squad on a number of occasions. In fact, he did play for the first team in the previous pre-season.

In what is starting to become an alarmingly common occurrence, a set of Barcelona fans were spotted hurling abusive chants towards Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr.

Barça will be facing PSG in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal today in less than an hour and in the lead-up to the game, a section of the Catalans’ supporters were seen chanting “Vinicius, die” on the streets.

It is not the first time this has happened, with Vinicius being constantly targeted by not only Barcelona fans but supporters of a number of other La Liga clubs.

In fact, last month, Barcelona fans were seen hurling the same chants before their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie against Napoli.

The same had happened outside Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in Montjuic prior to the Clasico in October last year.

Moreover, this past weekend, a Mallorca fan at Son Moix directed racist abuse towards Vinicius’ Real Madrid teammate, Aurelien Tchouameni.

It is shocking and embarrassing that these incidents continue to occur. It remains to be seen if any action is taken by the concerned authorities against those involved.
