Real Madrid have been rocked by a series of key injuries in the defensive department this season, with David Alaba being the most recent victim.

The Austrian recently picked up an ACL injury and could be ruled out for the rest of the season.

This leaves Carlo Ancelotti with Nacho Fernandez and Antonio Rudiger as the two remaining options in central defence.

A recent report from MARCA has offered a detailed report on Nacho Fernandez’s status at Real Madrid.

The report suggests Nacho could be in for an important period ahead. More importantly, the veteran centre-back may have a serious shot at playing in the upcoming European Championship next year

Nacho is already the captain of the Real Madrid side. His immense experience at the top level, coupled with his leadership abilities make him a key figure in the team.

Nacho, in fact, had signed a contract extension in the summer, knowing he would serve as the fourth-choice centre-back for Ancelotti.

But now, he is likely to serve as an automatic starter for Real Madrid and is captaining the side, alongside Antonio Rudiger.

A host of key injuries in defence, coupled with Real Madrid’s reluctance to sign new players in the January transfer window, has built an ideal backdrop for Nacho to make a late surge in his career.

Despite being 33, Nacho has a lot of prospects, as far as the Spanish national team is concerned.

The Real Madrid ace already has 24 caps for La Roja and his experience could be a key factor for coach Luis de la Fuente, as he looks to guide the Spanish team to glory next year.

A good run of form between now and the end of the season could boost the veteran star’s chances of making the Spain squad for the Euros next summer.

After unveiling the final squad for France for the upcoming European Championship, coach Didier Deschamps appeared in front of the media to discuss the nation’s preparations for the tournament.

Deschamps was notably asked about Kylian Mbappe and his potential move to Real Madrid in the coming summer.

Deschamps on Mbappe announcement

When asked when Real Madrid may announce the signing of Mbappe, the French coach replied (h/t L’Equipe), “They will decide when it’s time to make it official. As far as possible, I will adapt to the squad.”

This comes on the back of earlier reports which claim that Real Madrid are desperate to announce the signing of Mbappe before the start of Euro 2024.

The coveted tournament begins June 14, though France’s opening game is on June 18 as they take on Austria in the city of Dusseldorf.

Deschamps also dismissed concerns over Mbappe’s form, stating, “You don’t find Kylian Mbappé in good shape? He only scored 44 goals in the season. It’s true that he could have done better.”

Deschamps on Tchouameni’s fitness

As things stand, a total of three Real Madrid players are a part of the France squad for the European Championship.

One of them is Aurelien Tchouameni, who picked up a knock earlier this month which could keep him out of the upcoming Champions League final.

Deschamps, though, is not worried about his fitness and is hopeful of having the midfielder back for the Euros.

“Tchouaméni? I’m not worried. The deadline is too short for the UCL final but for the Euro it’s more than doable,” he said.
