‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,’ they say. That is precisely the attitude in the Real Madrid offices as it stands, for they do have an excessive inflow of lemons.

The club have been devastated by a series of injuries in recent months. The list initially limited by the names of Eder Militao, Thibaut Courtois and Arda Guler has slowly expanded to include Vinicius Jr., Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni.

The latest to join the list, as of earlier this week, is Dani Carvajal.

A long-term blow

The Real Madrid defender suffered an injury to the soleus muscle of his left calf in the match against Granada. While the initial prognosis did not appear too bad, tests have revealed that the player could be out for the rest of the year.

Ancelotti is thus without his first-choice right-back for at least three weeks in what comes as a big blow. The natural replacement is Lucas Vazquez, who played 45 minutes against Granada and churned out a promising display.

Yet, there is another Real Madrid Castilla star who could directly benefit from the situation – Vinicius Tobias.

The second benefactor

As revealed by Mundo Deportivo, Tobias could be in line to make his debut with the Real Madrid first team given the situation in the first team. After all, this is not the first time his name has appeared as an option for Carlo Ancelotti.

Tobias signed for Los Blancos in April 2022 from Shakhtar Donetsk as a direct result of UEFA’s relaxation for players in Ukraine after the war.

The men in white did not utilise their purchase clause on the player after his first year but did opt to renew his loan to give him another chance.

This season, Tobias has been far more influential for Raul Gonzalez’s side. He has shone in defence while also providing three assists and is unsurprisingly seen as an emergency option to cover the right-back department for the first team.

Tobias is no stranger to training sessions with the senior setup and has been called up to the squad twice so far by Ancelotti. While there is no guarantee, a debut could finally be on the horizon.

As Real Madrid gear up to face Borussia Dortmund in the finals of the UEFA Champions League this weekend, a number of their players interacted with the press today as part of the UEFA Open Media Day.

Jude Bellingham was one of the stars who answered questions from the media ahead of what will be an emotional game for him against his former club, in his homeland.

The England international has enjoyed a spectacular debut season at Real Madrid and is seen as a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or this season.

However, when asked about the Golden Orb, Bellingham tipped his Madrid teammate Vinicius Jr. as his pick to win the prestigious honour this year.

“For me, Vinicius is the best in the world. He creates magic out of nothing. He has everything to be the best,” said Bellingham, as quoted by The Athletic’s Guillermo Rai.

After all, Vinicius has also enjoyed a scintillating campaign and is one of the frontrunners to walk away with the Ballon d’Or, owing to his clutch performances for Real Madrid.

The Brazilian also spoke to the media today and was asked about the Ballon d’Or. Interestingly, he went on to name Bellingham as his pick to win the Golden Ball.

“I would give the Ballon d’Or to Bellingham,” he said, as quoted by Carrusel.

When Bellingham was informed about Vinicius picking him as the favourite for the Ballon d’Or, the England international responded by saying:

“If that’s how he feels, then you can split it in two (laughs).”

The responses show the strong bond and camaraderie that the two superstars of Real Madrid share.

Both are contenders to lift the Golden Ball this year and a win in the Champions League, coupled with strong performances in the summer’s international tournaments, would further enhance their chances.
