After triumphing against Mallorca courtesy of Antonio Rudiger’s 78th-minute winner, it is time for Real Madrid to divert their focus to the Copa del Rey.

The Merengues are set to take on Arandina CF at the Montecillo stadium in the round of 32 tie.

As the reigning champions of the competition, great expectations are once again placed on the shoulders of coach Carlo Ancelotti, who recently earned a contract extension.

With merely a day remaining in the highly anticipated encounter, Carlos Alonso, colloquially referred to as Zazu, captain of Arandina, has expressed his admiration for the Real Madrid players to AS.

Maximizing their opportunity

For Arandina, this is undeniably a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and thus the players want to avail it as best as they can.

Like a kid in a candy shop, Zazu claims the players have already created a list of the shirts they want, namedropping Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in particular as their shirts remain the most requested.

“We have already asked Real Madrid for the shirts we want. For security reasons, we can’t do it after the game and we have all made a list. I asked one of Modrić. He is an example, a veteran like me. I love him. I’ll try to scratch another one on the pitch.

“The Kroos one. Toni is another footballer whom I admire a lot. I will congratulate him on his birthday, which is today, January 4, and I will take advantage of that,” he remarked.

Adding that Nacho, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Thibuat Courtois’ jerseys are also sought-after, the players’ fascination for their upcoming encounters can be seen visibly.

“The most wanted shirts are Modrić and Kroos. Átomo has asked for Nacho’s because she is his sister’s idol. And the goalkeepers, Kepa and Courtois. We don’t know if everyone will come,” Zazu said.

Speaking in an interview with Sport BILD (h/t AS), Germany legend Michael Ballack has claimed that Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz is ready to play for Real Madrid.

Wirtz is a player that Real Madrid have been closely monitoring for a while now, with the German sensation being seen as a long-term replacement for Toni Kroos, who announced his retirement yesterday.

A move for Wirtz is being planned for the summer of 2025 and Ballack believes that the Bundesliga title winner with Leverkusen is ready for the big move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Wirtz is ready for Real Madrid,” said Ballack.

“In terms of football, Wirtz can definitely play for Real Madrid. You can also see it in Jude Bellingham after his move from BVB: when you play with even better players, you become even better,” he added.

Wirtz has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen that runs until the summer of 2027. As things stand, the new German champions have no intentions of selling their prized asset this year.

However, there appears to be an acceptance that the German international will be on the move in 2025.

Other top clubs like Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also understood to be interested, but Real Madrid are likely to beat them in the race should it come down to that next year.

A move for Wirtz, though, could cost in excess of €100 million for Real Madrid should they do indeed decide to proceed with his signing next year.
