Real Madrid cannot catch a break this season, with depletions in defense causing all sorts of headaches for the coaching staff.

Despite deeming it best not to sign any centre-backs in the recently concluded January transfer window, injuries at the back have put Real Madrid in a great dilemma ahead of the all-important encounter against Girona.

Doubts arising

Indeed, as per COPE (h/t Madrid Xtra) Nacho is a doubt for the Girona game along with Antonio Rudiger.

Nacho Fernandez did not train with the team today, staying inside the club facilities as he recovers from an overload.

Meanwhile, his defensive counterpart, Rudiger continues to be in the process of recovery after sustaining an injury last week, which kept him out of the last game against Atletico Madrid.

As per previous information, there seems to be some hope that the 30-year-old will be fit for Saturday’s match considering he completed some individual work on the field during today’s training sessions. Still, as of now, nothing is set in stone.

Alternatives devised

The Merengues have devised a safety blanket in case the duo is unable to make it back in time before Saturday’s clash at the Santiago Bernabeu

Indeed, if Rudiger and Nacho are not given the medical clearance, then Dani Carvajal and Aurelien Tchouameni are expected to form a partnership in the heart of defence.

Tchouameni has already been used as a make-shift centre-back to cover up for the absences in defence, and he is back after serving his suspension vs Atletico.

Meanwhile, Carvajal has also chipped in as a centre-back before, more recently in the derby on Sunday.

However, neither of them will be operating in their natural habitat in that scenario. As such, Madrid would be hoping to have the two absentees back as soon as possible.

Real Madrid are taking significant strides towards their targets for the summer. Kylian Mbappe finally appears close to sealing a move to Spain after years of running a soap opera and reports earlier today indicated a breakthrough towards one of the club’s other targets – Alphonso Davies.

As revealed earlier today, the Merengues have reached a verbal agreement with the Bayern Munich star over a move in the summer.

The player has been stalling talks of a renewal with hopes of a transfer for several months now, and the update earlier today brought the impression that the deal is sealed in stone.

Far from completed

According to a breaking update from Maximilian Koch, however, Davies is yet to take a decision on his future amid the claims of a verbal agreement with Real Madrid.

The fact remains that it no concrete decision or action has been taken yet. He has not yet made a final decision over his future, and a renewal with Bayern Munich cannot be ruled out.

The factor inhibiting Davies from reaching an agreement with the Bavarians, however, is an economic difference between the player’s demands and the club’s offer.

However, it is not clear as to what will transpire if Bayern concede to Davies’ demands.

As it stands, the momentum lies towards a move to Spain. His departure has been a constant topic in the dressing room for a long time now, and it would not come as a surprise if he left regardless.

Critical negotiations

While Los Blancos are indeed desperate to sign the young and dynamic left-back, they do not wish to ruin relations with Bayern Munich over the transfer. The objective, thus, is to make an attempt at the Germans’ front door and reach a mutual agreement.

Bayern Munich demand €50 million for their star defender, but Los Blancos are willing to offer just €35 million as a starting point. Nevertheless, the difference between the two parties is not glaring and can well be sealed with a few rounds of discussion.

After all, he has just one season left on his deal and is reluctant to renew, at least as it stands.
