Real Madrid showed their intent to return to the top of European football by spending a fortune on several players this summer.

The biggest investment was Yan Diomande, who joined Real Madrid for a fee of around €140 million, making him the club’s most expensive transfer.

Real Madrid are expected to spend a similar amount on a single individual next summer, but this time on a new midfielder.

Real Madrid eyeing big money move for a midfielder

While speaking to Ruben Martin’s YouTube channel, The Athletic journalist Mario Cortegana (h/t Defensa Central) has suggested that Real Madrid may spend as much as €120 million next summer on the next Diomande.

But the next Diomande may not necessarily be a forward or someone with the Ivorian’s skillset. In fact, Real Madrid are expected to spend big on a new midfielder next summer.

The club believe they have not been able to replace Toni Kroos or Luka Modric, and are, therefore, eyeing a similar brand of player.

Real Madrid consider midfield to be a key weak spot and will be ready to do everything they can in order to find an ideal solution in the market – someone who can instantly become a starter in the team.

Options are few

However, the options in the market remain limited for Real Madrid.

Los Blancos were close to signing Rodri this summer, but the Spaniard ended up signing for rivals Barcelona.

Enzo Fernandez was branded as another target, but the Argentine international ended up joining Manchester City instead.

Neither of them will be joining Real Madrid anytime soon. That leaves the club with the monumental task of finding someone who can fit the bill and worth the €120 outlay next summer.

The likes of Joshua Kimmich, Felix Nmecha, Vitinha or even Joao Neves look like potential options, but it remains to be seen whether or not the club will make a move for any of them next summer.

But for now, Real Madrid are clearly not satisfied with their current midfield options and it won’t be surprising to see someone like Eduardo Camavinga leaving the club next summer, though they did turn down an offer from Turkey.

After impressing during the international break, Eduardo Camavinga has a major opportunity to establish himself in Real Madrid’s midfield rotation.

Indeed, according to Defensa Central, Jose Mourinho is considering starting the Frenchman against Villarreal, with injuries and doubts over several players limiting his options.

Real Madrid cannot afford to drop points against Villarreal if they want to remain in the title race. However, Mourinho has issues to deal with in the squad, which could lead him to turn to Camavinga for a crucial role.

Camavinga could replace Tchouameni in midfield

The 23-year-old star could line up as the defensive midfielder in the double pivot, with Bernardo Silva or Arda Guler alongside him, and will be tasked with providing balance in midfield.

Real Madrid face Villarreal with several problems in central defence. Ibrahima Konate is expected to be a late call, leading Mourinho to consider moving Aurelien Tchouameni into defence alongside Antonio Rudiger.

Meanwhile, Federico Valverde could also struggle to be ready after the ankle injury he sustained in the derby before the international break.

The Uruguayan has continued to work individually away from the group and might return to group training tomorrow. Even then, his readiness to start remains in question.

That would leave a place open in midfield, with Camavinga in line to fill in.

Camavinga has started only one match this season, the defeat against Real Betis.

Despite his limited opportunities, Mourinho is keen to bring the Frenchman back into the fold after he impressed for France during the international break.

Zinedine Zidane called the Real Madrid star up for his first France squad, and the midfielder performed well during the break.

That has given Mourinho and Real Madrid reason to be optimistic about using him against Villarreal, with the hope that he can move closer to the level he showed after first arriving at the club.

Therefore, the Villarreal match could represent an important test for Camavinga and a chance for the Frenchman to show that he can provide the balance Real Madrid need in midfield.
