Real Madrid decide to add an extra year to Mourinho’s contract as return gets close – Romano
Real Madrid are now preparing for the official return of Jose Mourinho after transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano revealed fresh details regarding the Portuguese coach’s contract at the Santiago Bernabeu.
According to the journalist, the Portuguese manager is expected to sign an initial two-year agreement running until 2028, but the deal will include an automatic extension clause that could keep him at the club until June 2029.
As reported before, the agreement between Mourinho and Real Madrid is now fully completed in principle, with only the final formal signature still pending before the announcement becomes official.
Everything is close to completion
Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid has accelerated rapidly in recent days, with all major contractual points now approved by both parties and their legal representatives.
Mourinho and his long-time agent Jorge Mendes have already reached a verbal agreement with Real Madrid regarding salary, project structure, and contract duration.
Only the official documentation now remains before the Portuguese coach formally begins his second era at the club.
Reports suggest Mourinho is expected to travel to Madrid either at the end of next week or the beginning of the following one in order to complete the signing process personally.
Once the agreement becomes official, the idea is for Mourinho to immediately start building the next Real Madrid project with full authority ahead of the summer transfer window.
Structure of the contract
The structure of the reported contract says a lot about how seriously Real Madrid are approaching Mourinho’s return.
This is because the additional year will only be triggered if he successfully wins La Liga during his spell in charge.
The inclusion of an automatic extension clause linked to winning La Liga shows the club is not viewing this as a short-term emergency appointment.
Instead, the project appears to be designed around stability, authority, and long-term rebuilding after a season filled with uncertainty around leadership, dressing-room tension, and defensive instability.
In what will come as a pleasing development for fans, Fabrizio Romano reports that Real Madrid forward Rodrygo could make a comeback from his injury earlier than expected.
The 25-year-old Brazilian international has been out of action since March after suffering an ACL injury during a La Liga game against Getafe.
Due to the complete rupture of the ACL, coupled with associated meniscus damage, it was suggested that the attacker was staring at a lengthy time out on the sidelines and might not return until 2027.
In fact, the forward’s father, Eric Goes, recently stated in an interview that the Real Madrid ace could be back in February next year, just before the business end of the campaign.
Rodrygo could be back in December
However, as per the update from Romano, Rodrygo’s comeback could happen well before that expected date.
