Real Madrid defender expected to miss Euro 2024 due to season-ending injury

Real Madrid have pulled on with a makeshift back-line from the beginning of the season. Having lost Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois early in the season, Carlo Ancelotti has had to walk a tightrope to organise his back line.

David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger eventually stabilised as the Merengues’ primary defensive combination. 16 matchdays after Militao’s ACL tear, Real Madrid have now been inflicted with a second blow in the same department.

Out for the season

As relayed earlier today, the Austrian international is expected to miss the rest of the 2023-24 campaign owing to his latest injury. The situation leaves Carlo Ancelotti with Nacho Fernandez and Rudiger as his only viable defensive options.

According to reports from The Athletic, Alaba is also likely to miss the EUROs. Not only is this a big blow for the German National Team but a direct indicator that he will miss the start of next season for Real Madrid as well.

Ancelotti’s alternatives

The latest blow inflicted on the manager leaves him in a spot of bother.

As pointed out by Ancelotti in his post-match press conference, his immediate fix for the situation is Aurelien Tchouameni.

“Tchouameni is the first choice as a central. He did very well against Osasuna. It’s true that he doesn’t play in that position, but this is a moment of emergency and I think he can play there.”

Nevertheless, a signing in January is not ruled out and rumours in recent hours have brought out four candidates that the administration are considering – Antonio Silva, Willian Pacho, Goncalo Inacio and Giorgio Scalvini.

It thus remains to be seen if the management prefer to rely on the academy or sign a temporary solution to provide the required depth.

As Real Madrid gear up to face Borussia Dortmund in the finals of the UEFA Champions League this weekend, a number of their players interacted with the press today as part of the UEFA Open Media Day.

Jude Bellingham was one of the stars who answered questions from the media ahead of what will be an emotional game for him against his former club, in his homeland.

The England international has enjoyed a spectacular debut season at Real Madrid and is seen as a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or this season.

However, when asked about the Golden Orb, Bellingham tipped his Madrid teammate Vinicius Jr. as his pick to win the prestigious honour this year.

“For me, Vinicius is the best in the world. He creates magic out of nothing. He has everything to be the best,” said Bellingham, as quoted by The Athletic’s Guillermo Rai.

After all, Vinicius has also enjoyed a scintillating campaign and is one of the frontrunners to walk away with the Ballon d’Or, owing to his clutch performances for Real Madrid.

The Brazilian also spoke to the media today and was asked about the Ballon d’Or. Interestingly, he went on to name Bellingham as his pick to win the Golden Ball.

“I would give the Ballon d’Or to Bellingham,” he said, as quoted by Carrusel.

When Bellingham was informed about Vinicius picking him as the favourite for the Ballon d’Or, the England international responded by saying:

“If that’s how he feels, then you can split it in two (laughs).”

The responses show the strong bond and camaraderie that the two superstars of Real Madrid share.

Both are contenders to lift the Golden Ball this year and a win in the Champions League, coupled with strong performances in the summer’s international tournaments, would further enhance their chances.
