Real Madrid defender David Alaba faces a difficult start to 2024, as he continues his recovery after picking up a serious ACL knock earlier in the season.

Shortly after his injury came to light, it was thought that Alaba would miss the remainder of the campaign, in what was yet another blow for Real Madrid.

A few weeks after picking up the knock, Alaba has recently spoken about his injury for the first time, suggesting that he is working hard to get back on track.

Alaba faces a complicated recovery process

However, Alaba faces a complicated recovery process, as his ACL injury appears to be worse than what was initially thought.

According to journalist Ramon Sanchez (h/t SPORT), Alaba has been struggling with not just the ACL rupture, but his injury has also affected his meniscus and cartilage.

This could gravely complicate Alaba’s path the recovery and perhaps even delay it by a substantial margin.

SPORT speculates that Alaba’s update on Instagram might have come in relation to the update from Ramon Sanchez over his injury.

Potentially out for ten months

As mentioned earlier, Alaba was expected to miss out on the remainder of the campaign. But many had hoped he would be available at the start of next season.

However, Ramon Sanchez suggests that if Alaba’s recent complications persist, he could be out for a period of about 10 months.

That means the Austrian international is facing the risk of not only missing the pre-season preparations but also the early stages of next season.

This could prove to be a bad omen for Real Madrid, who may not even be in a position to secure a sale of Alaba next summer, especially if the defender remains out injured.

Real Madrid will sign off on their successful La Liga campaign today with a fixture against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The game, being seen as a final preparation for the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, sees manager Carlo Ancelotti field his strongest possible lineup.

All eyes will obviously be on the retiring Toni Kroos, who bids goodbye to the Bernabeu in what will be his final home game as a Real Madrid player.

The German international starts in the centre of the park alongside Federico Valverde, while Eduardo Camavinga slots in as the No. 6.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid captain, Nacho Fernandez, also starts in what could be his last game at the Bernabeu as well.

Nacho pairs up with Antonio Rudiger in defence, flanked by the full-back pairing of Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy. Thibaut Courtois starts in goal ahead of Andriy Lunin and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Up front, Vinicius Jr. starts in attack, partnering up with Rodrygo Goes. Top scorer Jude Bellingham occupies the attacking midfield role for Real Madrid.
