The association of Spanish footballers (AFE) is set to hold their showpiece gala at the start of next month, where they are expected to announce all the best players of the 2021/22 campaign throughout all the divisions of Spanish football.
The association has chosen the winners through a vote conducted by the respective members of the group. According to a report from MARCA, Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema is in contention to win the Best Player of La Liga.
Widely regarded as one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or later this year, Benzema was one of the top performers of the 2021/22 La Liga campaign, bagging 27 goals and 12 assists.
The Frenchman’s performances in front of goal were critical in helping Real Madrid clinch the league title from the hands of their cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid.
Benzema is not the only Real Madrid player likely to be honoured in this showpiece AFE gala, with Sergio Arribas also set to win the best player of RFEF (Group two) award.
Arribas is one of the most gifted talents to come out of the Real Madrid academy in recent years, with the youngster currently serving as the creator-in-chief for the Castilla side. With four goals and two assists, he has emerged as a key player for the reserve team.
Arribas being crowned the best player of the RFEF Group II could go a long way in helping him make a case for earning a promotion to the senior side in the near future.
The attacking playmaker has already raised many eyebrows with his performances in the lower divisions. And it will be interesting to see whether Carlo Ancelotti formally accommodates him as part of the first team anytime soon.
