Girona have steamrolled through the first half of the 2023-24 league season. The Catalan outfit have been in impeccable form, racking up 46 goals and sitting one point above Real Madrid provisionally.

Michel’s setup has worked wonders at Girona this season, with the football flowing freely and clear cohesion between various departments on the field. One young star in the team, who has caught the attention of clubs across the globe is Yan Couto.

On Real Madrid’s agenda

As revealed on the covers of MARCA‘s Sunday edition, Couto is on Real Madrid’s agenda. The young right-back is seen as one of world football’s most up-and-coming stars and a clear successor to Dani Carvajal.

Couto is owned by Premier League champions Manchester City and is currently on a two-year loan stint at Girona. This season alone, he has racked up five assists and a goal in La Liga in just 19 appearances.

Couto, whose market value stands at €12 million, has come up against Real Madrid once this season, notably in Girona’s only defeat of the season. He was tasked with controlling Vinicius Jr on the night, a player he recently described as the toughest opponent he has ever faced.

Real Madrid’s right-back situation

Los Blancos currently have Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez to cover the right-back position. The former is set to continue as the bonafide starter for next season, while talks over renewing Vazquez are also gaining weight.

With the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Alphonso Davies, and a new centre-back on the team’s summer agenda, it remains to be seen if Real Madrid have the required bandwidth to rope in Couto in June.

Negotiations with Manchester City will not be easy, however, for the Premier League side are known to ask for a premium on their players.

Speaking in an interview with Sport BILD (h/t AS), Germany legend Michael Ballack has claimed that Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz is ready to play for Real Madrid.

Wirtz is a player that Real Madrid have been closely monitoring for a while now, with the German sensation being seen as a long-term replacement for Toni Kroos, who announced his retirement yesterday.

A move for Wirtz is being planned for the summer of 2025 and Ballack believes that the Bundesliga title winner with Leverkusen is ready for the big move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Wirtz is ready for Real Madrid,” said Ballack.

“In terms of football, Wirtz can definitely play for Real Madrid. You can also see it in Jude Bellingham after his move from BVB: when you play with even better players, you become even better,” he added.

Wirtz has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen that runs until the summer of 2027. As things stand, the new German champions have no intentions of selling their prized asset this year.

However, there appears to be an acceptance that the German international will be on the move in 2025.

Other top clubs like Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also understood to be interested, but Real Madrid are likely to beat them in the race should it come down to that next year.

A move for Wirtz, though, could cost in excess of €100 million for Real Madrid should they do indeed decide to proceed with his signing next year.
