Toni Kroos has been a pivotal player for Real Madrid this season under Carlo Ancelotti, finding his feet after months of rotation and playing second fiddle in midfield to now becoming arguably their best midfielder of the season.

The German has been unplayable over the last couple of months, and become an undisputed starter for the club. Madrid, delighted with his performances, had offered him a contract extension a while back.

Kroos, however, has always been hesitant about extending his playing career. He retired from the German national team after the 2021 European Championship, and the assumption has always been that he will call time on his club career earlier than most other players, too.

Now 34, Kroos is at the last juncture of his career, and is in two minds about signing the extension offered by Madrid. He has also been invited by the German NT to come out of retirement for the 2024 Euros.

According to Mario Cortegana, Madrid have informed Kroos that he is free to sign the extension tabled to him whenever he wants.

With the club season coming to a close in a couple of months, they want him to focus on the football first before making his final decision.

Especially this season as Madrid enter the final leg of La Liga, leading the competition by six points with 13 games left to play, while also half-way through to the Champions League quarter-finals after a 0-1 lead against RB Leipzig in the round of 16 first leg.

However, it has been reported that Kroos will make a final call about coming back from retirement for Germany before the international break in March, so he can play his first set of games under Julian Nagelsmann.

The decision to either renew with Madrid or retire at the end of the season, though, will come later, depending on los blancos‘ position in La Liga and the Champions League.

Real Madrid are just days away from their highly anticipated Champions League final showdown against Borussia Dortmund.

Once the final has been played, planning for the summer transfer window will be in full swing, with the topic of arrivals and departures likely to be discussed.

One of the players facing an uncertain future is Nacho Fernandez. The Real Madrid captain has yet to disclose his future ambitions, despite nearing the end of his contract.

Nacho opens up about future

While he previously claimed that he had already made his decision, a shift in tone can be observed now, with Nacho asserting that he will soon sit with the club and his family to evaluate the best course of action

For now, the 34-year-old remains focused on the Champions League final and does not wish to draw any unnecessary attention.

“Future? The focus is on the final now. After that, I will sit with the club, Ancelotti and my family and I’ll decide what’s the best thing for me,” he told El Chiringuito.

Fernandez acknowledges the fans’ support

Additionally, the veteran centre-back claimed that he does need a grand farewell to know how much the Madrid faithful appreciate him.

“That love the fans have for Toni is the same they have for me. I don’t need a farewell to know the fans love me,” he reflected.

Nacho has devoted his entire career to Real Madrid, rising through the ranks from the youth academy and spending over two decades with the Merengues.

However, he has alluded to the possibility of perhaps donning the colours of a different jersey.

“Sometimes the circumstances are not right to be a ‘one club man’,” he cryptically claimed.
