Real Madrid goalkeeper breaks silence on the ‘ghost goal’ from El Clasico

Real Madrid’s win over Barcelona in El Clasico over the weekend was completely overshadowed by the ‘ghost goal controversy’.

With the game firmly poised, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal’s effort was saved by Andriy Lunin on the edge of the line. But Barcelona argued that the ball had crossed the line.

However, due to a lack of goal-line technology in La Liga, VAR made a controversial decision to dismiss the plea of Barcelona and the game continued.

Barça were left furious with the decision and their president Joan Laporta has come out all guns blazing, even threatening to take legal action.

After training at the Valdebebas, Lunin stopped to sign autographs for fans. There, he was asked whether or not he thought the ball had crossed the line. To no one’s surprise, the Ukrainian refused to accept the goal.

“For me, no,” stated Lunin (h/t Mundo Deportivo), who had a rather shoddy display in comparison to how he had performed a few days ago against Manchester City.

Indeed, Lunin was crucial for Real Madrid last week when the club secured a narrow win over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, notably saving two penalties during the shootout.

The Ukrainian international will look to maintain his good form as he looks to help Real Madrid not only seal the league title but also claim their 15th Champions League title come the end of the season.

Real Madrid, for their part, are ready to reward Lunin with a contract extension. The goalkeeper’s current deal at the Bernabeu expires in 2025.

Bundesliga title-winner ‘is ready for Real Madrid’, says former German great

Speaking in an interview with Sport BILD (h/t AS), Germany legend Michael Ballack has claimed that Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz is ready to play for Real Madrid.

Wirtz is a player that Real Madrid have been closely monitoring for a while now, with the German sensation being seen as a long-term replacement for Toni Kroos, who announced his retirement yesterday.

A move for Wirtz is being planned for the summer of 2025 and Ballack believes that the Bundesliga title winner with Leverkusen is ready for the big move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Wirtz is ready for Real Madrid,” said Ballack.

“In terms of football, Wirtz can definitely play for Real Madrid. You can also see it in Jude Bellingham after his move from BVB: when you play with even better players, you become even better,” he added.

Wirtz has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen that runs until the summer of 2027. As things stand, the new German champions have no intentions of selling their prized asset this year.

However, there appears to be an acceptance that the German international will be on the move in 2025.

Other top clubs like Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also understood to be interested, but Real Madrid are likely to beat them in the race should it come down to that next year.

A move for Wirtz, though, could cost in excess of €100 million for Real Madrid should they do indeed decide to proceed with his signing next year.
