Real Madrid were dealt with a major blow in the summer when top target Kylian Mbappe, after months of speculations, decided to renew his contract with Paris Saint-Germain rather than moving to Santiago Bernabeu.

The rejection left Real Madrid in a state of dismay and since then, the club have completely closed the chapter of bringing the Frenchman to the Spanish capital, reports MARCA.

The Spanish publication suggests that Real Madrid have yet to hold a dialogue with the camp over Mbappe’s potential move to Santiago Bernabeu, even after the PSG superstar starred in the World Cup, notably scoring a hat-trick in the final.

The club’s summer pursuit of the Frenchman, followed by his subsequent rejection, had greatly exhausted the club’s hierarchy, especially after they put great time and effort to sign the player.

Since then, Real Madrid have worked behind the scenes to elevate the roles of existing stars such as Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, instead of relying on the market for a new Galactico.

Real Madrid have great hopes in Vinicius, in particular, and believe the Brazilian can further elevate himself as one of the face of the club’s attacking unit, for the years to come.

As for Mbappe, the Whites do acknowledge the quality and the talent the Frenchman offers, but the club have no intention to disrupt the current ‘dynamic’ of the dressing room by bringing in a player who has been often criticised for his ego.

Moreover, Real Madrid believe no club in European football are in a position to meet the €100 million premium PSG paid for Mbappe’s loyalty. They are also unlikely to meet Les Parisiens‘ valuation of the Frenchman. As such, the door for Mbappe to join Real Madrid remains closed, for the time being.

Although Antonio Rudiger has had success since joining Real Madrid last summer, the club are in need of more depth and players that can form the backbone of the defensive unit in the years to come.

As part of their plans, Real Madrid are prioritising a move for Josko Gvardiol in the coming summer, reports 90 Min.

The outlet suggests Gvardiol will be one of the most wanted prospects in the market, with both Real Madrid and Manchester City eyeing a move for the Croatian international come the end of the season.

Formerly of Dinamo Zagreb, Gvardiol has enjoyed immense success since his move to the Bundesliga in 2021. He has impressed onlookers with his skill, organisation and discipline, which, coupled with his versatility, make him an appealing target for any European giant.

Gvardiol was also one of the top performers at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, helping Croatia finish third in the competition. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Real Madrid among the clubs who have been keeping an eye on the defender for a while now.

However, signing Gvardiol will be a tricky task for Los Blancos. The player still has a long-term contract at Leipzig and could cost up to €85 million, as reported by 90 Min. Not to mention, the competition from Man City could be significant.

Real Madrid have no shortage of alternatives, though, with the club notably closely monitoring Portuguese defensive whizkid Antonio Silva, among others. So it will be interesting to see how the Spanish giants approach the market in this coming summer.
