Thibaut Courtois’ injury did not derail Real Madrid’s season in the manner that was anticipated.

Losing the best goalkeeper in the world was seen as the end of the road by many, but the club found able resources in Andriy Lunin and Kepa Arrizabalaga to cover the gaping void.

Despite having two in-form goalkeepers, however, there is considerable doubt over the future of the goalkeeping position.

After all, there is no fixed date for Courtois’ return and no certainty over the futures of Kepa or Lunin.

On the hunt

As revealed by MARCA‘s latest update, Real Madrid have an eye on the transfer market for a new goalkeeper.

The decision over whether a signing will be made is yet to be finalized, but the scouts are looking out for potential targets.

Kepa was Ancelotti’s undisputed starter for the greater part of the season but fell out of favour after his injury in the lead-up to the UCL clash against Braga. He is likely to return to Chelsea at the end of his stint.

Lunin, meanwhile, has a contract until 2025 and Real Madrid will see it amicable to sell him this summer if he does not wish to renew.

Considering that he might reject the proposal of staying in Courtois’ shadow after a special season, his continuity is a serious doubt.

Moreover, neither player has convinced as an able long-term replacement for Courtois, who is already 31 years of age.

The academy option

The Spanish outlet speaks of a third in-house solution in Madrid – Fran Gonzalez. The 18-year-old Castilla goalkeeper has caught the attention of the first-team management as a special talent and is climbing up the ranks at a serious pace.

He may be young to take over as Courtois’ deputy next season, but he is a strong candidate to take over in the long term.

Another player on the club’s radar is Uruguayan prospect Randall Rodriguez, who is seen as a potential long-term successor to Courtois.

Needless to say, Real Madrid’s decision over a new signing will also largely depend on Gonzalez’s progress and quality.

After unveiling the final squad for France for the upcoming European Championship, coach Didier Deschamps appeared in front of the media to discuss the nation’s preparations for the tournament.

Deschamps was notably asked about Kylian Mbappe and his potential move to Real Madrid in the coming summer.

Deschamps on Mbappe announcement

When asked when Real Madrid may announce the signing of Mbappe, the French coach replied (h/t L’Equipe), “They will decide when it’s time to make it official. As far as possible, I will adapt to the squad.”

This comes on the back of earlier reports which claim that Real Madrid are desperate to announce the signing of Mbappe before the start of Euro 2024.

The coveted tournament begins June 14, though France’s opening game is on June 18 as they take on Austria in the city of Dusseldorf.

Deschamps also dismissed concerns over Mbappe’s form, stating, “You don’t find Kylian Mbappé in good shape? He only scored 44 goals in the season. It’s true that he could have done better.”

Deschamps on Tchouameni’s fitness

As things stand, a total of three Real Madrid players are a part of the France squad for the European Championship.

One of them is Aurelien Tchouameni, who picked up a knock earlier this month which could keep him out of the upcoming Champions League final.

Deschamps, though, is not worried about his fitness and is hopeful of having the midfielder back for the Euros.

“Tchouaméni? I’m not worried. The deadline is too short for the UCL final but for the Euro it’s more than doable,” he said.
