A report from The Athletic confirms that Real Madrid might extend the contracts of veteran midfielders Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

It is said that Carlo Ancelotti is keen on keeping both players, praising their great performances and the competitive spirit they bring. He values their influence on team culture within the locker room.

Interestingly enough, while there were rumours about Modric leaving, his agent clarified that no decision has been made yet, as the midfielder has not met with the club. For what it is worth, Modric himself is open to staying for another year.

Luka Modric was likely to depart

It is to be noted that both players’ contracts end at the end of the season, and this marks the first time this season that Real Madrid have contemplated the midfielders’ tenure beyond their contracts.

Interestingly, the initial plan since last summer was for at least one of the duo to depart after the 2023-2024 season.

This move would also alleviate the wage bill pressure, given that both players rank among the highest earners in the squad. In that sense, Modric emerged as the prime candidate for departure, primarily due to his reduced role this season.

Despite that, it is said that Modric expresses a preference for remaining at Real Madrid. While there have been rumours suggesting his exit has been agreed upon, the player is yet to engage in discussions with the club to finalize any arrangement.

Why the sudden change?

In Kroos’ case, there is a readiness to retain him at the club as long as he maintains his physical and mental well-being.

Real’s remarkable achievements this season, clinching La Liga and securing a spot in the Champions League final, coupled with standout individual performances, prompt the club to reassess the future of both players.

In that regard, Ancelotti is keen on retaining the players. He lauds their outstanding performances and values the competitive spirit they bring, along with the enriching influence they have on their teammates.

While there is no confirmation from the team year, the resolution of both situations is expected to unfold in the coming weeks.

Real Madrid are set to welcome two new stars this summer, Kylian Mbappe and Endrick, but the Merengues are keen on further bolstering their squad.

Owing to the embarrassment of riches Real Madrid possess in midfield, replacing Toni Kroos with a new signing in midfield is not seen as an immediate priority.

Nonetheless, interesting opportunities will invariably be evaluated closely and it appears the name of Adrien Rabiot has entered the club’s crosshairs.

Real Madrid not the only ones interested

But, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Real Madrid face stiff competition from Premier League clubs and Saudi Arabian teams in their pursuit of midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

The French midfielder is set to become a free agent if he chooses not to renew his contract with Juventus, a decision that seems increasingly likely.

Known for his technical prowess and versatility, Rabiot excels at playing multiple roles in midfield and notably thriving as a goal threat with late runs inside the opposition box that tend to catch opponents off guard.

While Real Madrid have no shortage of quality in midfield, Dani Ceballos’ exit could pave the way for the 29-year-old to secure a signing for Los Blancos.

However, Real Madrid would have to outmanoeuvre both the financial prowess of Saudi Arabian teams and the competitive allure of Premier League clubs to secure Rabiot’s signature.

On top of that, Juventus are also not giving up on their efforts to try and renew the contract of the French international.

In any case, Rabiot is unlikely to be a priority target for the club but they will be sure to keep a close eye on how his situation develops.
