Real Madrid once again staged a spectacular comeback to beat Atletico Madrid 5-3 in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final in Riyadh on Wednesday night.

Dani Carvajal stole the show with a spectacular display for Los Merengues but one cannot take away the contributions of Federico Valverde on the night.

The 25-year-old gave it his all for the 112 minutes he was on the pitch, popping up everywhere on the field and being important in both attacking and defensive phases for his team.

Valverde sustained a knock vs Atletico

However, as per The Athletic’s Guillermo Rai, Federico Valverde sustained a knock during the game against Atletico Madrid.

It was the reason why he was seen limping during the second half of extra time and was forced to be taken off by Carlo Ancelotti, with Arda Guler replacing him.

Even though Valverde was off when the scoreline was at 3-3, Real Madrid won the game thanks to late goals from Joselu and Brahim Diaz.

As for the Uruguayan international, his knock is not considered to be a serious one, although it is still unclear if he will be ready for the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.

Valverde seen as a leader

During the 112 minutes he was on the pitch, Valverde made important contributions for Real Madrid on both sides of the pitch and ensured that his presence was felt.

The 25-year-old showed great determination and character to help his team mount a comeback after falling behind to Atletico Madrid on two occasions during the game.

As such, the coaching staff sees Valverde as a leader of the group for the future.

For now, though, the Real Madrid camp will be hoping that the 25-year-old’s knock is nothing serious and he is ready for the finals.

Real Madrid midfielder wants to follow in Kroos’ footsteps and retire at the club

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos recently shared that he plans to retire after this season. Now, according to a report from MARCA (h/t Madrid Zone), it seems Luka Modric, another key player, might also be eyeing retirement in Madrid.

Modric, who is 39 years old, has an agreement in principle with Real Madrid to stay for one more season. However, with manager Carlo Ancelotti’s backing for both Modric and Kroos to stay, it has come down to the fact that only one will remain at the club.

Is Modric returning now?

No, not yet. Like Kroos, Modric wants to finish his career at Real Madrid. If he wanted to retire, he would not have agreed to extend his contract.

It is to be noted that Modric is currently one of the top earners at Real Madrid, but his high salary did not align with his reduced playing time.

Despite his wish to stay, the club was not initially keen on keeping him under such terms.

However, things have changed recently. The club is now considering renewing Modric’s contract due to several reasons.

First, the midfielder is open to a pay cut and second, his positive influence on younger players like Arda Guler is valued. Lastly, his desire to retire as a Madrid player is a significant factor.

Interestingly, Modric has turned down tempting offers from Saudi Arabia and the MLS to stay with Real Madrid.

Throughout this season, the Croatian international has accepted his decreased playing time, although it was challenging for him given his competitive spirit and pride.

His role might diminish further once Real Madrid find a replacement for Kroos next season, but for now, Modric will continue to be a prominent figure for the team.
