It was already a painful night for Real Madrid after their 1-2 defeat to Bayern Munich, but the fallout from the game has made matters even worse.

With the Champions League quarter-final finely poised, Los Blancos have now been handed a significant blow ahead of the return leg in Germany.

The issue centres around Aurelien Tchouameni, who will miss the decisive second leg in Munich on April 15 due to suspension.

The French midfielder picked up a yellow card during the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, ruling him out of one of the most important matches of Real Madrid’s season.

The incident

The booking came following an incident involving his international teammate, Michael Olise.

As Bayern pushed forward with intent, Tchouameni was penalised for pulling the winger, who proved to be a constant threat down the right flank throughout the match.

As such, Bayern executed their game plan effectively and left Madrid with a valuable advantage heading into the second leg.

However, much of the post-match discussion has centred on the referee’s decision rather than the result itself.

Tchouameni did not hide his frustration when speaking after the game, clearly baffled by the caution that now sidelines him for the return fixture.

“I was just running, and then I don’t know what happened. The referee decided that, because there were many fouls, he had to show a yellow card.

“But honestly, I don’t understand it,” he said.

Manager Alvaro Arbeloa shared similar concerns, questioning both consistency and decision-making from the officials during the match.

He pointed to another controversial moment involving Kylian Mbappe, suggesting there was a lack of clarity in how incidents were judged.

“Tchouameni’s yellow card? I don’t know what the referee saw there. And why didn’t he show the red card after the foul on Mbappe?”

That sense of injustice could linger as Real Madrid prepare for the trip to Munich.

Without Tchouameni, the midfield setup will need rethinking, especially against a Bayern side that has already shown its ability to exploit space and control transitions.

Yan Diomande was the standout performer in Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The summer arrival scored his first goal in a Real Madrid shirt, which was enough to secure all three points for his team on Saturday night.

Signed from RB Leipzig in the summer for a massive fee of €140 million, including add-ons, the teenage winger endured a slow start to life in the Spanish capital, with minutes being drip-fed by manager Jose Mourinho.

But, having started against Villarreal last night ahead of Vinicius Jr., the Ivory Coast international made the most of his opportunity.

Diomande overjoyed

After the final whistle, Diomande spoke to Real Madrid TV about the performance and his landmark moment.

“It was a good match. We always play to win, and today we did that. I am happy with the victory,” he said.

Diomande also expressed his excitement about playing at Real Madrid’s home ground, highlighting the pride he feels whenever he steps onto the pitch.

“It is always good to play here. It is the most beautiful stadium in the world and the biggest club. I am always excited to play here,” he said.

The forward was delighted to finally get his name on the scoresheet, explaining how much the moment meant to him and the team.

“I am happy. I had been waiting for that first goal for a long time. I am pleased, both for myself and for the team. In that position, I think the only option was to control the ball, turn and shoot,” Diomande explained.

Looking forward to the Champions League

Up next for Los Blancos is a UEFA Champions League encounter against AS Roma in Italy next week.

And Diomande could not hide his excitement about competing in the Champions League with Real Madrid, describing it as a dream for any young footballer.

“I am really excited about playing in the Champions League. It is every child’s dream, and I am grateful to be playing in it with Real Madrid,” he concluded.
