According to Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is a big fan of Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, who happens to be a top candidate for the managerial role at the Spanish cub.

Alonso, who recently announced that he would continue at Leverkusen despite interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, is doing excellent work in Germany, with Leverkusen gunning for three titles this season.

The Spaniard’s continuity at the Bundesliga club comes in as a huge sigh of relief for Real Madrid, as they can now evaluate his management before rushing into a decision.

There’s much more to what meets the eye

It is to be noted that although Real Madrid are currently happy with how things are with Carlo Ancelotti, everyone is aware of the fact that things might change instantly by 2025, including the Italian.

And it is because of this reason that there happens to be a release clause in Alonso’s contract with Leverkusen, which will come into effect in 2025.

Adding to the story, Romano has mentioned how things might pan out by the end of the next season, explaining,

“Xabi Alonso is a very smart person, he knows that Ancelotti is a legendary manager and he respects him a lot, but at Real Madrid, every year is a new story.

“He knows that next summer (2025), the situation at Real Madrid could be different,” added the journalist.

Romano added that as Alonso continues his journey in Germany, he will have the watchful eyes of Perez glazing upon him. This is because Perez is impressed by the Spaniard’s ideas.

“Xabi Alonso has a big fan at Real Madrid: Florentino Perez. Florentino has been in love with Xabi since day one, since he was a player, because of his style, and his ideas for the present and future.

“He’s always been one of his favourite players and people at the club, and the feeling remains. Florentino believes that Xabi has everything to be Real Madrid’s manager,” added Romano.

Ancelotti’s contract at Real Madrid runs until 2026, the same length as Alonso’s at Leverkusen. However, there is no ruling out the possibility that the 42-year-old Spaniard replaces his former boss at the Santiago Bernabeu as early as next year.

Shocking Modric, Vinicius, Cristiano fact makes Real Madrid fans ‘feel old’

Luka Modric is set to stay with Real Madrid for another season, meaning he will have played more seasons with Vinicius Jr. (7) than he did with Cristiano Ronaldo (6).

Feeling old yet? We thought so too!

Modric joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2012 after four seasons with Tottenham Hotspur. On the other hand, Vinicius Jr. joined Real Madrid in 2018.

By the end of the 2023/24 season, Modric and Vinicius will have spent six seasons together. This is the same number of seasons Modric played with Cristiano Ronaldo, who was at Madrid from 2009 to 2018.

However, with Modric set to stay for another season, he will surpass that, playing more seasons with Vinicius than with Ronaldo, the club’s all-time top scorer.

A new contract for Modric

It is important to note that Real Madrid and Modric have reached an agreement in principle for his contract renewal for another year.

At 38, Modric’s contract was set to expire at the end of the current season. For a while, it seemed the Croatian star might leave Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

However, things have changed recently, and Real Madrid have decided to offer him a new contract.

Interestingly, Real Madrid have also offered a renewal to Toni Kroos with club president Florentino Perez personally involved in the negotiations.

Modric and Kroos will continue

Reports suggest that Modric has agreed to the new proposal, with an agreement in principle now in place. It is also expected that Kroos will accept his offer, meaning Real Madrid will keep both veteran players for another season.

The Croatian was reportedly willing to accept a pay cut and a reduced role in the team to continue playing for Real Madrid. This flexibility may have sped up the agreement process.

His willingness to adapt to a reduced role and accept a pay cut has likely influenced the club’s decision to renew his contract for one more year.
