According to Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, Real Madrid and Brahim Diaz have reached an agreement in principle over a new contract for the midfielder until the summer of 2027.

Diaz, who is currently away on loan at AC Milan, has been on Real Madrid’s books since 2019 when he arrived from Manchester City.

The young attacking midfielder did not get a lot of minutes with the first-team setup upon his arrival and thus left for AC Milan on loan in the summer of 2020.

After enjoying a decent season, Diaz returned to the Rossoneri again in 2021, this time on a two-year loan deal with an option to make the transfer permanent for €22 million, with Real Madrid retaining the choice to sign him back for €27 million.

The 23-year-old has been excelling at San Siro and is a vital part of Stefano Pioli’s side. A meeting is set to take place between the two clubs imminently to see where they stand with regard to plans for the Spaniard.

In the meantime, though, Real Madrid have swiftly negotiated and agreed a contract extension with Diaz, even though it is still unclear where he will be playing football next season.

Diaz, whose current contract at Madrid runs until 2025, is set to be topped up by two more years, furthering his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu until the summer of 2027. The attacking midfielder will also get a salary hike, which will place him among the mid-level earners in the squad.

The 23-year-old has always wanted to fight for his place and succeed at Real Madrid. The officials have seen him as a player of a potentially similar profile to Luka Modric in the past.

With the veteran’s extension not certain, there could be a place for Diaz in the squad next season. Whether Los Blancos opt to renew Marco Asensio or not could also have a bearing on what the future holds for the former Manchester City ace.

In a positive update, Real Madrid defender David Alaba is set to return from his injury by making an appearance for the Austrian national team against Estonia later tonight, confirms Sergio Quirante.

Alaba has been out of action for over a month now, after picking up an injury during Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg tie against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Austrian international had been making progress in training at the club but was not ready in time for the Clasico against Barcelona on March 19.

Despite the injury, Alaba travelled to join the Austrian national team during the current international break.

And, according to the report from Sergio Quirante, the Real Madrid ace has good feelings after training with his national team. Having had several sessions under his belt now, the versatile defender is all set to make his return later tonight.

Austria will face off against Estonia in their second UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifiers Group F encounter later tonight and Alaba is in line to get some minutes against the minnows.

What remains to be seen is whether manager Ralf Rangnick opts to start the former Bayern Munich superstar on the night or introduces him as a substitute in the latter stages of the game.

Alaba’s imminent return will be good news for Real Madrid, who have a series of important matches coming up after the international break as they look to salvage their season.

Following the loss to Barcelona earlier this month, Carlo Ancelotti’s men are now 12 points off the top of the table in La Liga and are pretty much out of the equation to retain the title. They are also training the Catalans 1-0 in the Copa del Rey semi-finals while Chelsea await in the Champions League quarter-finals.
