Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. targeted by racist chants again at Atletico Madrid stadium – report

Vinicius Jr. has morphed into one of the faces of the franchise at Real Madrid. Having once arrived as a scrawny young Brazilian from Flamengo, his journey has been nothing but a meteoric ascent as he continues to elevate to new heights in the Spanish capital.

But even among the roars of devoted supporters, a concerning theme persists. Vinicius finds himself tussling with an adversary that transcends the boundaries of the football pitch – racism.

And against Atletico Madrid last night, which saw Real Madrid fatefully bow out of the Copa del Rey, the Brazilian superstar was once again subject to prejudice.

Confronting racism

After recently triumphing over Barcelona with a 4-1 scoreline as Vinicius took the headlines with his hat-trick, a section of Atleti supporters appeared to opt for nefarious measures to get inside Vinicius’ head and prevent him from doing any further damage.

As per El Mundo dozens of Atletico Madrid fans at the gates of the Wanda Metropolitano, before the game got underway, chanted that shameful “Vinicius, you are a monkey!”

Despite the severity of the situation, these racist remarks especially targeted toward Vinicius cannot be labeled as a one-off incident.

In fact, a mannequin dressed in Vinicius’ jersey was unsettlingly hanging down a bridge by Atletico Madrid supporters just last year.

Once the match began, the 23-year-old was constantly seen urging the referee to draw his attention toward the spectators in the stadium who were apparently hurling abuse at him.

Yet, the player was simply handed a yellow card for his actions and given no sympathy in hostile territory.

While the Merengues could not extend their winning streak, the game once again cast a spotlight on Spain’s terrible image and issues tackling racism, a stain on the beautiful game.

Real Madrid will sign off on their successful La Liga campaign today with a fixture against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The game, being seen as a final preparation for the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, sees manager Carlo Ancelotti field his strongest possible lineup.

All eyes will obviously be on the retiring Toni Kroos, who bids goodbye to the Bernabeu in what will be his final home game as a Real Madrid player.

The German international starts in the centre of the park alongside Federico Valverde, while Eduardo Camavinga slots in as the No. 6.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid captain, Nacho Fernandez, also starts in what could be his last game at the Bernabeu as well.

Nacho pairs up with Antonio Rudiger in defence, flanked by the full-back pairing of Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy. Thibaut Courtois starts in goal ahead of Andriy Lunin and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Up front, Vinicius Jr. starts in attack, partnering up with Rodrygo Goes. Top scorer Jude Bellingham occupies the attacking midfield role for Real Madrid.
