Real Madrid summer signing’s defensive stat underlines dominant start to the season
Real Madrid signed Ibrahima Konate as a free agent in the summer following the expiry of his Liverpool contract.
The Frenchman arrived to strengthen Jose Mourinho’s defence, but there were some concerns about how reliable he could be in such a high-pressure environment.
The first few weeks have proved very encouraging in this regard. Seven appearances into his chapter, the France centre-back is already producing numbers that underline just how dominant he has been.
Konate has been dribbled past only once across those seven games. He has also recorded 23 recoveries this season, the highest total of any player in the Real Madrid squad.
Konate giving Mourinho exactly what he needs
The numbers are impressive individually, but their importance becomes clearer when placed within Jose Mourinho’s approach.
Madrid want to defend aggressively and prevent opponents from exploiting the space that can appear when the team push forward.

That requires centre-backs who are comfortable being exposed rather than defenders who need constant protection.
Konate looks built for that responsibility. His physical strength is obvious, but being dribbled past only once points to more than athleticism.
Timing, positioning and knowing when not to dive into a challenge are equally important. If Konate can consistently stop attackers without compromising Madrid’s defensive structure, Mourinho gains greater freedom elsewhere.
The 23 recoveries are just as significant. He is not only dominating aerial duels but also helping Madrid recover and restart attacks.
Madrid may have found their defensive reference
As flattering as these stats are, they need to be approached with caution. Seven games, with one of them a friendly, is nowhere near enough to judge a player.
However, as the saying goes, “well begun is half done”. Konate has made an impressive impression at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Konate arrived with considerable expectations, and so far he has looked less like a player adjusting to Real Madrid and more like one already comfortable with the responsibility.
With Dean Huijsen alongside him and Mourinho trying to establish a more organised defensive identity, the Frenchman is emerging as their reference.
Atletico Madrid provide a sterner test for Konate than any he has faced so far this season, barring the Inter Milan game.
If he can continue to perform well for Mourinho’s team in the coming weeks and months, Madrid will feel they have managed a steal with Konate.
Free-agent signings do not get much better, and it remains to be seen how the former Liverpool man fares against Los Colchoneros.

Real Madrid face Arsenal, Chelsea competition for Bundesliga defender – report
Even though Real Madrid have strengthened their defensive line significantly over the past two summers, they are still looking for more reinforcements.
Jose Mourinho was already pushing for another centre-back signing this past summer despite signing Ibrahima Konate. But Raul Asencio’s refusal to leave meant that there was no other addition made.
However, heading into 2027, Los Blancos intend to sign another centre-back, given that Antonio Rudiger’s contract expires at the end of the season and is unlikely to be renewed.
Moreover, Eder Militao’s continued fitness issues are also a cause of concern, prompting the Merengues to explore the possibility of bringing in another centre-half.
And, as already reported, Jarell Quansah of Bayer Leverkusen has emerged as an option for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid regularly scouting Quansah
Building on that, journalist Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany reports that Real Madrid have been regularly scouting Quansah this season.

It goes to further underline that the Spanish capital side seem to hold a genuine interest in the 23-year-old England international, who can play both at centre-back and right-back.
Quansah has become a permanent fixture in the defensive line at Leverkusen since his move to the Bundesliga from Liverpool in 2025.
The young defender was also a part of the England national team that finished third at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and has nine caps for the Three Lions.
Stiff competition for Quansah
However, as per the report, Real Madrid are not the only club showing an interest in Quansah.
Indeed, Premier League champions Arsenal and fellow London club Chelsea are also closely monitoring the 23-year-old England international at Leverkusen.

Moreover, Quansah’s boyhood club, Liverpool, are also keeping a close eye on his development. After all, the Reds have a buyback clause worth €70 million for their academy product, which is valid until 15 June 2027.
A promising, young defender with plenty of potential and room for development, Quansah can be an exciting long-term addition for Real Madrid.
However, as per reports, some within the club hierarchy believe that the team could do with more experienced options to bolster the backline. So, it remains to be seen how things progress and whether the interest in Quansah develops into an offer.
