Real Madrid fans suffered yet another setback this week when Kylian Mbappe picked up an injury during a UEFA Nations League fixture against Turkiye.

The Frenchman looked in discomfort shortly after scoring the winning goal, leading to immediate concerns around the French camp. Even his Real Madrid teammate Arda Guler looked worried.

The true extent of Mbappe’s injury has not been determined as of yet. But it is yet another reminder of his poor fitness record since joining the club.

Mbappe’s alarming injury record at Real Madrid

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, the setback marks the seventh injury Mbappe has suffered since arriving at Real Madrid in the summer of 2024.

Across that period, the Frenchman has missed 14 matches due to injury, a figure that rises to 17 when including three games missed through gastroenteritis at the Club World Cup. Despite that, he has maintained an impressive availability rate of 88.8%.

The most concerning aspect is the nature of this latest problem. Mbappe injured his left knee against Turkiye, the very same joint that troubled him for several months last season.

He initially tried to continue but was ultimately forced off and has since left the France camp to return to Madrid.

That left knee has been his biggest issue since joining the club, having caused a lengthy absence that stretched across the turn of the year and into the early months of 2026.

Early signs are positive

Despite the worrying history, the initial noises coming out of the France camp have been reassuring.

France teammate Rayan Cherki offered an encouraging update, suggesting the problem is not as serious as first feared. “He’s fine. At first we were very worried, but then we saw it wasn’t anything serious,” Cherki said.

Those words will offer some comfort to Real Madrid, who cannot afford to be without their talisman for any significant length of time.

Mbappe has been in sensational form this season, scoring eight goals in eight matches and single-handedly carrying the team on several occasions.

Nonetheless, Real Madrid will take no risks with the forward. He is set to return to the club for further assessment, and his comeback will only be sanctioned once he is fully fit.

Kylian Mbappe marked his 100th UEFA Champions League appearance with a goal against AS Roma, reaching another major milestone in a competition he has dominated throughout his career.

As such, the Real Madrid forward scored his 72nd Champions League goal on Wednesday, moving past club legend Raul Gonzalez on the competition’s all-time scoring list and into fifth place.

Mbappe surpasses Messi and Raul

Mbappe reached 100 Champions League appearances against Roma and marked the occasion with a goal.

At 27 years and 298 days, he became the youngest player to reach that landmark, surpassing Lionel Messi’s previous record of 28 years and 84 days.

As such, Mbappe’s 72 Champions League goals have come across three clubs: six for Monaco, 42 for Paris Saint-Germain and 24 for Real Madrid.

Only Messi and Lewandowski outscored Mbappe

Mbappe’s record becomes even more impressive when measured against other top Champions League forwards during their first 100 appearances.

Robert Lewandowski scored 81 goals in his first 100 matches, while Messi registered 77. Mbappe’s 72 goals place him behind those two players, but ahead of numerous other legendary attackers.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains the Champions League benchmark

Despite moving into fifth place, Mbappe still has a substantial gap to close before reaching the top of the all-time scoring rankings.

Karim Benzema sits ahead of him with 90 goals, followed by Lewandowski on 109 and Messi on 129. Cristiano Ronaldo leads the standings with 140 Champions League goals.

Mbappe’s 72 strikes leave him 18 behind Benzema, meaning the next target in his pursuit of the all-time greats is within reach if he maintains his scoring rate.

Understandably, Ronaldo’s 141 goals remain the benchmark, leaving Mbappe 68 goals short of the record.

The gap is considerable, but the Frenchman has already demonstrated the scoring consistency needed to climb the rankings, and it won’t be a surprise if he breaks his idol’s record.
