Real Madrid target closing in on Liverpool contract extension – Romano
At the end of last year, Real Madrid were increasingly keen on the services of Ibrahima Konate.
The former Leipzig defender was facing an uncertain future at Liverpool, with his contract at Anfield expiring at the end of the season, making him a potential free agent.
Real Madrid, in search of fresh reinforcements in central defence, were considering making a Bosman move for the Frenchman.
Konate closing in on Liverpool renewal
According to Fabrizio Romano, Konate is now set to prolong his stay at Liverpool, with the defender closing in on a contract extension at Anfield.
The two parties are currently closing in on an agreement that would see the defender commit his long-term future to Merseyside.
Romano adds that Real Madrid were indeed one of the interested parties in the race to sign the Frenchman at the end of last year.

However, after failing to find an agreement with the centre-back, Liverpool stopped negotiations in November, with some believing that the player used Los Blancos to secure a better deal at Liverpool.
Nevertheless, Konate’s contract extension could leave Real Madrid with one less option in the summer transfer window.
Formerly of RB Leipzig and Sochaux, Konate could have brought some invaluable experience to the table for Real Madrid, having featured in a combined total of more than 250 matches across Germany and England.
Real Madrid, though, have no dearth of options in the market. The Spanish giants have been notably linked with a move for Nico Schlotterbeck, too, though the German also looks set to renew his contract at Borussia Dortmund.
But on a positive note, Schlotterbeck is likely to have a special release clause that would allow clubs like Real Madrid to snap him up on a cut-price deal next summer.

Confirmed: Real Madrid starting lineup against Elche – Guler in for Bellingham
Real Madrid will be looking to pick up their fifth win of the 2026/27 La Liga season when they take on Elche CF at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero later tonight.
With 12 points from five games, Los Blancos are currently second in the league table, three points below leaders FC Barcelona.
As such, the Spanish capital club will be eager to get the win and close the gap to the top.
Guler starts, Bellingham rested
Ahead of kickoff, Real Madrid have announced the starting lineup that will take the field against Elche, with Jose Mourinho making some important changes.
For starters, Arda Guler is back in the lineup after appearing as a substitute in the win over Rayo Vallecano.
Interestingly, however, he starts in the attacking midfield role, with Mourinho opting to rest Jude Bellingham, who has started all of Real Madrid’s games so far.
That also means that Yan Diomande retains his place in the team, starting for a second time in a row on the right wing. Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. continue in their respective positions in attack.
Another notable change sees Aurelien Tchouameni make his first start of the season after recovering from injury and making two appearances off the bench.
He replaces Bernardo Silva as Federico Valverde’s partner in the middle of the park.
Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marc Cucurella come in as full-backs, while Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen slot in at centre-back in front of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
