Real Madrid teenage summer signing will have to wait for his first-team debut
Real Madrid signed Sergio Martinez from Racing Santander in the summer as one of their low cost-high potential moves in midfield.
The initial idea was for the 19-year-old midfield prospect to be part of the Castilla side and adapt, eventually earning a promotion to the first team and a regular role under Jose Mourinho.
His initial training sessions, however, won over the manager and the coach began dreaming of handing the player his first-team debut imminently.
There was even talk of the player reaching that milestone against Inter Milan or Rayo Vallecano.
Back to square one
Now, as confirmed by Defensa Central, Real Madrid have again changed their stance on Martinez’s future and no longer see his first-team debut to be imminent.
Mourinho had a word with Real Madrid Castilla manager Julian Lopez de Lerma and has come to the conclusion that Martinez needs to settle first before shuttling between the first-team and subsidiary team dynamics.
The club see stability to be a critical factor that will determine his progression and development, and regular first-team call-ups with minimal minutes may not be the best for Martinez.
In that sense, the two managers have agreed that he will currently stay with the subsidiary side.
The confidence in Martinez remains
The Spanish outlet also confirms that Real Madrid’s plan to delay Martinez’s first-team integration does not signal any loss of confidence in the player.
On the contrary, the club strongly believe in him and see his development to be crucial.
Once he is settled, playing regularly, adapted to the city and football and comfortable, they will hand him a chance to step up and prove his worth with the first-team. That was, in fact, the initial plan with him all along.
Meanwhile, there is strong enough competition in midfield for Real Madrid with four players already competing for two spots in the double-pivot (Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva).
Rushing Martinez, thus, is not a priority in any sense, and the new signing will have to play the long-term game with patience.
Denzel Dumfries has emerged as the clear winner of Real Madrid’s early-season battle for the right-back position, with Jose Mourinho trusting the Dutchman ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
According to MARCA, Dumfries has established himself as Mourinho’s preferred option after having started five of Madrid’s first six matches.
Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, has started only one game at full-back, with the manager also testing him in midfield during the meeting with Inter.
The early selection pattern suggests this is not just simple rotation. Rather, Mourinho appears to have identified the qualities he wants on the right side of his defence, and Dumfries currently fits that profile better.
Why Mourinho is leaning towards Dumfries
Dumfries offers the physical presence and defensive aggression that Mourinho values in an intense, direct side.
His ability to compete in one-on-one situations, protect his flank and maintain his structure without the ball has given him an advantage.
Alexander-Arnold offers a very different skill set. His passing range, ball control and ability to dictate attacks from deep remain among the strongest attributes of his game.
In fact, few full-backs can match the Englishman for long-distance distribution or accuracy.
The problem for him is that Mourinho appears unwilling to sacrifice defensive security to maximise those qualities.
The manager’s preference so far has been for a right-back who can provide greater reliability when Madrid do not have possession.
That explains why Alexander-Arnold was given an opportunity in central midfield against Inter.
The position potentially allows him to influence the game with his passing without placing the same defensive demands on him as the full-back role.
Atletico test could strengthen Dumfries’ case
Alexander-Arnold has also yet to completely settle into life in Madrid, despite arriving a season earlier than Dumfries, who, by contrast, has become a regular presence in Mourinho’s starting XI.
The next two fixtures could reveal whether that hierarchy is becoming permanent.
Dumfries is expected to start against Atletico Madrid, a physically demanding fixture in which Mourinho is likely to value his defensive strength and aggression.
The more intriguing decision could come against Elche. With the opposition expected to pose a different challenge, Mourinho could see an opportunity to rotate and give Alexander-Arnold another chance to prove his value.

Lamine Yamal should think his lucky star that he doesn’t play for Madrid because he would’ve never been discovered. Better yet, he would’ve either been loan out or sold. So frustrating with Madrid passing on good young players for overrated non performing players.
