Referees in La Liga have once again come under fire, especially after Real Madrid’s game against Almeria.

Barcelona, in particular, have been left quite furious by some of the decisions made by the referees and the apparent inaction of VAR.

Shortly after the Almeria game, Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez even went on to point out the referees’ inconsistency when it comes to officiating a Real Madrid game and a Barcelona game.

Xavi added that winning the league title is impossible if La Liga referees continue to treat Real Madrid in a special way.

Real Madrid’s response to Xavi

A day after Xavi’s scathing attack on the referees, Real Madrid have issued a stern response to the Barcelona coach as well as the club itself.

Through their media channel Real Madrid TV, the club highlighted the Negreira case which had harrowed Barcelona throughout 2023.

“Over the course of 20 years, Barcelona have been paying the Vice President of the Referees Committee, more than 600 matches that Xavi played as a Barcelona player. Those 600 matches are all suspicious,” Real Madrid said (h/t Goal).

“Both Real Madrid and Real Madrid TV have been very respectful at all times with the Negreira case,” the club added.

The relationship between Real Madrid and Barcelona did turn hostile shortly after the Negreira allegations came to light.

But it is perhaps fair to say that Los Blancos never went all out against their Catalan counterpart, even though the divide between the two clubs stretched widely during this period.

Nevertheless, Real Madrid continued their attack on Barcelona and Xavi, stating, “We are not saying that, the club was accused of that and during the period in which Xavi was a Barcelona player.”

“Real Madrid respected the case, but the judge, in his own words, considered it strange that Barcelona paid this much for nothing,” they added.

Real Madrid will sign off on their successful La Liga campaign today with a fixture against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The game, being seen as a final preparation for the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, sees manager Carlo Ancelotti field his strongest possible lineup.

All eyes will obviously be on the retiring Toni Kroos, who bids goodbye to the Bernabeu in what will be his final home game as a Real Madrid player.

The German international starts in the centre of the park alongside Federico Valverde, while Eduardo Camavinga slots in as the No. 6.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid captain, Nacho Fernandez, also starts in what could be his last game at the Bernabeu as well.

Nacho pairs up with Antonio Rudiger in defence, flanked by the full-back pairing of Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy. Thibaut Courtois starts in goal ahead of Andriy Lunin and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Up front, Vinicius Jr. starts in attack, partnering up with Rodrygo Goes. Top scorer Jude Bellingham occupies the attacking midfield role for Real Madrid.
