It has been a topsy-turvy start to the year for Real Madrid so far. Although reigning Spanish champions have fallen behind in the race for La Liga title, notably trailing league leaders Barcelona by eight points, they have done well in the cup competitions.

Real Madrid recently demolished Liverpool 5-2 in the first leg of the Round of 16. They have also reached the semifinal round of Copa Del Rey and are set to play FC Barcelona later in the month.

One of the highlights for Real Madrid lately is the strong defensive bond between Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger.

According to Diario AS (h/t Madrid Xtra), the two defenders enjoy playing with each other and have built a strong understanding at the heart of Real Madrid’s four-man backline.

Their combination has been critical in helping Los Blancos get back on track following a surprise defeat to Mallorca earlier in the year.

Although the attack has been the main factor behind Real Madrid’s resurgence during this period, the defence, too, has played its part, notably keeping two clean sheets in the last five matches.

The report further suggests that Real Madrid are extremely happy with Rudiger’s progress in recent weeks. The German international has stepped up his game quite well, and his presence as a leader at the back has been crucial to the team, especially amidst David Alaba’s injury woes.

This has led to Real Madrid appearing more complete as a team and although there are still room for improvement, the Whites stand an excellent chance of advancing further in the Champions League while doing well in the Copa Del Rey as well.

The Santiago Bernabeu is ready for the first time in a fortnight as Real Madrid are set to host relegation-threatened Real Valladolid for gameweek 27 of La Liga. The gap between them and Barcelona was increased to 15 yesternight, and los blancos will be looking to cut it down to 12 to scarce the tiniest bit of hope of defending their league crown.

Carlo Ancelotti has opted to use a highly attacking starting lineup for the clash, with Karim Benzema spearheading the front-three. He is flanked by Marco Asensio on the right while Vinicius Jr retains his place on the left.

Rodrygo also gets the nod to start, probably as an attacking midfielder in what looks like a 4-2-3-1.

Aurelien Tchouameni has been given the nod in midfield, with Toni Kroos forming the double pivot alongside him.

With Antonio Rudiger, Ferland Mendy, and Nacho out injured, Eduardo Camavinga gets the license to start as the left-back, while Lucas Vazquez flanks the defence from the right. The usual suspects — Eder Militao and David Alaba — start in central defence.

Thibaut Courtois was a doubt heading into this game, but has been given the medical greenlight to take his place as the goalkeeper.

Madrid XI: Courtois; Vazquez, Militao, Alaba, Camavinga; Tchouameni, Kroos; Asensio, Rodrygo, Vinicius; Benzema
