As we reach the final phase of the campaign, everything suggests Nacho Fernandez will end his 23-year association with Real Madrid and leave the club on a free transfer.

Real Madrid are expected to make an effort to keep hold of the player. But it appears Nacho has his heart set on a new adventure elsewhere.

Nacho rejected a move to Leverkusen

Nacho has had no shortage of suitors either. But the defender is being quite picky about his next club, knowing it will serve as the last chapter of his illustrious career.

In fact, a recent report from Jorge Picon (h/t Madrid Zone) suggests that Nacho was approached by Bayer Leverkusen, who are coached by Xabi Alonso.

Alonso, one of the leading candidates to replace Carlo Ancelotti in 2025, offered Nacho the chance to play in the Bundesliga and Champions League next season.

However, Nacho is not interested in remaining in elite European football. As such, he turned down the advances of the German champions.

Nacho eyeing a move to MLS

As per the report, Nacho wants to continue his career in Major League Soccer (MLS). This decision, reached after months of deliberation with his family, marks a significant shift for the veteran player.

Nacho has informed Real Madrid management of his intention to depart. His representatives are already working on securing his next move, with a strong preference for a club in the United States.

He views MLS as an attractive option to extend his career for a few more years and potentially end his playing days in a growing league.

This inclination aligns with previous approaches from MLS teams last year, which Nacho opted to delay in favour of another season with Real Madrid.

A key hurdle exists in Nacho’s MLS aspirations: salary limitations. MLS regulations restrict the number of players per team who can exceed the salary cap.

With only five centre-backs currently occupying DP positions across the league, Nacho faces stiff competition for such a coveted contract. Despite these limitations, Nacho’s representatives are actively exploring options.

His immediate focus remains on finishing the season strong with Real Madrid, aiming to secure another Champions League title and potentially becoming the club’s most decorated player alongside Luka Modric.

Speaking in an interview with Vamos (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has acknowledged that Real Madrid ace Jude Bellingham is the No. 1 footballer in the world currently.

Bellingham has enjoyed a spectacular debut season at Real Madrid and has been one of their chief protagonists as the Merengues won the La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup titles and made it to the UCL finals.

Even though his form has somewhat dipped in the latter stages of the season, the England international remains integral to Carlo Ancelotti’s plans and one of Los Blancos’ most important players.

And Spain manager Luis de la Fuente expressed his admiration for Bellingham, saying:

“He is a player who is doing particularly well. It’s a subjective view, but I like Bellingham’s style a lot, I like that type of player, powerful….”

When asked if Bellingham is the No. 1 player in the world at the moment, De la Fuente replied in the affirmative, as he said: “I think so.”

Bellingham has played 40 times in all competitions for Real Madrid this season, racking up a total of 23 goals and 12 assists in the process.

The 20-year-old’s exploits with Los Blancos in his debut campaign have put him in contention for the Ballon d’Or this year.

A strong performance in the finals of the UEFA Champions League next month and a solid run with England at the UEFA Euro 2024 could further his chances of winning the Golden Ball, although his teammate Vinicius Jr. is also an equally strong contender.
