Veteran Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos will return to the starting XI when Los Blancos take on Almeria at home on Sunday, January 21, reports AS (h/t Madrid Xtra).

After a scintillating performance against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, Kroos was dropped to the bench against Atletico Madrid for Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey Round of 16 tie.

Kroos is still an unassailable presence for the team, appearing in 27 games across all competitions, scoring one goal and six assists. Of those 27 games, he has started in 17 while the rest have come from the bench.

Even during his brief appearance against Atletico Madrid last night, he played three key passes and made several crucial interceptions.

The midfielder looks all set to return to the starting XI on Sunday night, possibly at the expense of fellow veteran Luka Modric, who started against Atletico Madrid last night.

While it is one thing that Kroos remains a key member of the team, there is still no update on his contract renewal despite the fact that his deal expires at the end of the season.

Real Madrid really want to extend Toni Kroos’ contract, but there’s a problem – Kroos hasn’t said yes or no yet, leaving everyone unsure about what will happen.

The 33-year-old wants to finish his football career on a high note and He plans to retire before his body can’t keep up anymore which is why he is not ready to make a decision just yet. Instead, he’s waiting until the end of the season.

Why? Because he wants to see how his body feels after playing the whole season. He doesn’t want to spend too much time on the bench; he wants to be on the field, contributing to the team.

So, even though Real Madrid are super eager to lock him in for more time, Kroos is taking his time to think it through and make the best choice for himself based on how his body holds up during the season.

Real Madrid ace misses training for third consecutive day ahead of UCL final

As Real Madrid get closer and closer to their final game of the season against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League, they are now sweating over the availability of one of their players.

It has already been confirmed that both David Alaba and Aurelien Tchouameni will miss the finals in London due to injuries.

Other than that, Carlo Ancelotti is likely to have the entirety of his squad available at his disposal, although there could be some concerns surrounding Andriy Lunin.

Lunin not in training for the third day in running

Indeed, Andriy Lunin has not participated in team training today, making it three days in a row heading into the Champions League final, reports Mundo Deportivo.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper is down with a fever that has kept him out of training for three days in a row now.

However, the report does add that despite not being in training for three days now, the Ukrainian international will fly to London and be on the squad list for the finals.

But with reports already suggesting that Thibaut Courtois will be starting in goal against Dortmund, Lunin’s continued absence from training only further strengthens the Belgian’s chances.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was absent from training on Tuesday due to personal reasons, is back working with the rest of the squad today. The Spaniard will have no involvement in Saturday’s final though.

Carlo Ancelotti is likely to go with the exact same starting lineup that he named for the Merengues’ final La Liga match against Real Betis.
