Real Madrid veteran’s future unclear with contract expiring in 2024, no negotiations so far

For years, Lucas Vazquez has done a solid job at Real Madrid without really standing out in the limelight. The 32-year-old veteran winger-turned-right-back has been a largely reliable option whenever needed, as he is proving currently in the absence of Dani Carvajal.

Indeed, with the senior right-back getting sidelined with an injury earlier this month, Vazquez has stepped in seamlessly and ensured that Los Blancos have not felt Carvajal’s absence, more so considering that the latter had been in prime form this season.

Despite his limited opportunities, the Spaniard has been putting up some impressive numbers when it comes to his attacking contributions – 1.63 chances created per 90 minutes, 1.45 key passes, 1.63 dribbles attempted, and 0.95 goal contribution, for every 90 minutes.

Future unknown

As it happens, though, Vazquez is one of the Real Madrid players whose contracts expire at the end of the ongoing season in 2024.

And, as per a report from AS, the 32-year-old’s contract situation and future, at this point, is an unknown quantity, with no clarity as to how things will progress in the months to come.

The relationship between the player and the club is very good, but everything is on standby now and no negotiations have taken place with regard to a new deal for Vazquez.

It must be remembered that Carvajal’s contract runs until 2025, meaning Vazquez would once again have to settle for a backup role if he opts to renew with Real Madrid.

But, the canterano might be open to continuing with that role, having shown no objections so far. However, a decision will not be made right away and there is still time for discussions to take place.

Although, Los Blancos must be wary of the fact that Vazquez can start negotiating with other clubs from January 1.

According to a report from Defensa Central, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is prepared to promote Castilla player Mario Martin if Dani Ceballos leaves the team this summer.

Ceballos’ future at the club is currently a hot topic and If he does decide to leave, Ancelotti has already identified Martín as his replacement.

This news came amidst the announcement of Toni Kroos’s retirement that has sent shockwaves through Real Madrid.

Now, it is suggested that Kroos’s retirement was expected to influence Ceballos’s future at the club.

Initially, it seemed the former Arsenal midfielder would leave, and the club was even searching for a new team for him. However, with Kroos leaving, there could be a possibility that Ceballos could have a more significant role next season.

Despite this, Real Madrid are not ruling out any possibilities. They are already considering potential replacements for Ceballos and have focused on promoting Martin, who wants to fight for a place in the first team.

It is said that the club is very pleased with his performance and there is even a chance that he could receive a surprise promotion if both Kroos and Ceballos leave, though the club does not expect Ceballos to depart.

Promoting Martin, who has been a regular part of the first-team training sessions, would be a cost-effective solution, aligning with club president Florentino Perez’s goal of minimizing spending on the midfield this season.

It is to be noted that Martin has even had some playing time with the first team in recent weeks, indicating the club’s growing trust in his abilities.

Despite Kroos’s retirement announcement, Real Madrid does not plan to enter the transfer market for a new midfielder. The club is confident in the abilities of their current six midfielders, including the continued presence of Ceballos.

However, if Ceballos decides to leave, Madrid will look to their Castilla team for a replacement, with Martin being the top candidate.
