Real Madrid weighing up move for Manchester United defender to replace David Alaba

The storm clouds of misfortune have cast a downpour of injuries upon Real Madrid this season.

The casualty list continues to grow, with David Alaba the most recent entry to this list. Alaba suffered an ACL injury against Villarreal, which is set to keep him out for the entirety of the season.

Recent reports have even argued that Alaba’s involvement in the 2024 Euro is in jeopardy, as the Austrian National Team will also be poised to suffer the repercussions of Alaba’s absence.

As such, the Merengues are intent on making up for his absence in defense, with a number of options in the transfer market being surveyed.

Real Madrid may reconcile with a familiar face

Indeed, as per Arancha Rodríguez (h/t Madrid Xtra) a possible reinforcement in the upcoming winter transfer could be an old friend such as Raphael Varane.

Varane won it all in the Spanish Capital, cementing himself as a starter at the heart of defense alongside the battle-hardened Sergio Ramos.

After making the jump to Manchester United, however, things have not gone as well. The Frenchman has lost his prominence in the Red Devils’ starting XI and no longer provides the same kind of assurance in defense.

Due to his waning form, the player may particularly appreciate a return to his former club and Los Blancos could also benefit tremendously with a player who not only was a star defender in his heyday; but also is a familiar figure within the club.

Varane’s contract expires in June 2024, while he currently maintains a €35 million price. Due to his contract set to expire soon, though, Madrid may be able to get their way in negotiations.

Alternatives on the table

However, Real Madrid will be keeping their options open heading into January.

Goncalo Inacio of Sporting, Antonio Silva of Benfica, Willian Pacho of Eintracht Frankfurt and Giorgio Scalvini of Atalanta are all reportedly being eyed as potential replacements for Alaba.

Even so, financial complications will certainly be a factor with some of their signings and Madrid will likely have to choose a cost-effective route.

It also remains to be seen if the management would rather sign a temporary solution to give the necessary depth, or to rely on youth products from the academy.

Real Madrid will sign off on their successful La Liga campaign today with a fixture against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The game, being seen as a final preparation for the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, sees manager Carlo Ancelotti field his strongest possible lineup.

All eyes will obviously be on the retiring Toni Kroos, who bids goodbye to the Bernabeu in what will be his final home game as a Real Madrid player.

The German international starts in the centre of the park alongside Federico Valverde, while Eduardo Camavinga slots in as the No. 6.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid captain, Nacho Fernandez, also starts in what could be his last game at the Bernabeu as well.

Nacho pairs up with Antonio Rudiger in defence, flanked by the full-back pairing of Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy. Thibaut Courtois starts in goal ahead of Andriy Lunin and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Up front, Vinicius Jr. starts in attack, partnering up with Rodrygo Goes. Top scorer Jude Bellingham occupies the attacking midfield role for Real Madrid.
